Oops: Newspapers around the world use SNL pic as official Palin one
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 10:17 PM by Newsjock
Source: TV Squad

As I was eating breakfast while flipping the pages of a French local newspaper this morning, my eyes caught the picture above, which accompanied an article about Sarah Palin. I couldn't put my finger on it right away, but I knew there was a problem with this picture. The caption under it says that during interviews, Palin is hesitant, troubled and clumsy but didn't offer more on where the picture was taken and who was on the right.

All day, I tried to discover what was wrong with the picture. Thanks to Quebec's news station 93,3, which I listen to in the afternoon, I learned what was wrong about it: it's a picture of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in a recent Saturday Night Live sketch! Oops!

... Thing is, the snafu wasn't only made in my local newspaper. Actually, the article, with the picture attached, was written by Agence France-Presse, a company similar to the Associated Press; this means that the article and the SNL picture was published around the world!

Unbelievable. When have you ever seen a parody that was so funny and when they quoted the subject word for word?

...but I recognized most of her "speech" word for word, which is just plain scary. :scared:

She's a parody of herself. With Bushisms you can at least see he's trying to address the subject, if badly. Palinisms are just Republican talking points strung together without bothering to think whether they actually make any sense or address the topic.

21. Sarah Palin is, in a word, Campy
Sarah Palin wants to be taken seriously but the things she does are laughed at, whether it is really her or a spot-on spoof. To me, Sarah Palin is the epitome of campiness.

From wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campy

Camp is an aesthetic in which something has appeal because of its bad taste or ironic value. When the term first appeared in 1909, it was used to refer to ostentatious, exaggerated, affected, theatrical, effeminate or homosexual behaviour. By the mid-1970s, the term was defined as "banality, artifice, mediocrity, or ostentation so extreme as to have perversely sophisticated appeal."<1> American writer Susan Sontag's 1964 essay "Notes on 'Camp'" emphasised artifice, frivolity, naïve middle-class pretentiousness and shocking excess as key elements.

(snip)

The term "camp" as we now know it comes form the Batman TV series from the 60's. It was the first time a genre parodied itself. In the past, comic book recreations tried to appeal to the kids who read the comic books. But the Batman show actually made fun of the whole thing -- the corny dialogue, the improbable scenarios, the ridiculous clean cut nature of the heroes et al, all the while playing it with a straight face. One reviewer described it as something on the level of a play they put on in "camp." The show turned out to be a success because kids liked it anyway and adults found it funny and the term "camp" remained the catch phrase as a style that described the tongue-in-cheek silliness of the show with its gaudy colors and flamboyant characters. The term stuck as a part of American colloquialism and is today used as a description for anything over the top in a theatrical way.

That caption has been a work in progress...looks like I may have found a winner. That photo...fellow DUer ColbertWatcher found it and posted it here first with the caption "Here Is What Hope Looks Like". When I asked to use it, ColbertWatcher shrunk the photo down a bit and lightened it slightly for me. Truth be told I post a lot of snark but this photo makes it hard for me to do so...likely a good thing in these scary times. This photo touches me greatly too, to me it is an inspiring reminder of what we fight for and why we can never give up.
Here is the origional as posted by ColbertWatcher:

39. Funny, but just a goof-up in a local French Canadian newspaper, not in
"newspapers around the world".

The report is by "Agence France-Presse", the photo is by AP ("PHOTO AP").

The caption identifying Tina Fey as Sarah Palin ("à gauche") was probably written by the local journalist who simply chose the prettiest "Palin" photo he could find to accompany the report.

because she doesn't read anything...I'd take Tina Fey over Palin for VP any day!!!!

The other I watched a clip of Fey and Palin doing the "same interview" at times you couldn't tell them apart. While very funny, how truly sad that this country has been reduced to a parody by the Republican Party. It's time we as a nation grow up and quit voting for "stupid" because they are more likable!

61. Funny, but TV Squad is wrong here.
Just because the article was written by AFP doesn't mean the picture that accompanies it has accompanied it in every paper that runs the story. Each paper can run its own photos with wire stories, and so this is almost certainly the fault of the local paper, not the AFP.

77. "Thanks to Quebec's news station 93,3"
Are you a Quebecer too ?:hi:

Yesterday I asked my mother about the

U.S elections in general and when I asked her if she knew Palin she replied:

"Qui?La folle?"

(Who? The crazy woman?).

I was a bit surprised but hey,my mom is very well informed. :)
