US soldier killed by small-arms fire in Baghdad

The US military says an American soldier has been killed in Iraq.

The military says the soldier came under small-arms fire during a patrol Monday afternoon in eastern Baghdad.

The military's statement says the soldier's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The death raises to at least 4,175 members of the US military who have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003. That is according to an Associated Press count.
