McCain camp claims credit over bailout changes
Source: AFP

CHICAGO (AFP) — John McCain's presidential campaign claimed credit as Congress readied Monday to vote on an emergency economic package, but Democrats said the Republican's last-ditch intervention had been no help.

Mitt Romney, McCain's erstwhile rival for the Republican nomination, said the deal on a Wall Street bailout worth up to 700 billion dollars would never have happened without the Arizona senator.

Speaking on NBC television, the former Massachusetts governor said "this bill would not have been agreed to had it not been for John McCain."

"That doesn't mean that he's the only guy doing that. And there many people ... who have been critical to it," Romney said.

"But, you know, this is a bipartisan accomplishment, a bipartisan success. And if people want to get something done in Washington, they just watch John McCain," he said.

"He's been the guy whose name is at the top of major pieces of legislation for a long time."

"He's (McCain) responsible"...

If McCain is responsible for major pieces of legislation for a long time how come we needed this bailout? How did we get to such a crisis? If he's been the guardian of the people's money he did a piss poor job of it.

If he's going to take credit, (does this bill deserve any credit?) he must also take blame
for what has happened since he has been there for 26 years, and according to the Republicans he was instrumental in any and all legislation passed during his time in office.

The Republicans get curiouser and curiouser.

12. Funny Republican Senator Gregg didn't mention McCain
Edited on Mon Sep-29-08 11:07 AM by Bluenorthwest
When he gave his presser about the agreement Friday, Gregg mentioned many people from both Parties. He thanked Blunt, Pelosi, Frank, Dodd, Paulson, and others. He never mentioned the name John McCain. Also not spoken, the name 'Bush'.
Romeney in not in Congress and has no idea what went on. Gregg reported in detail to the American people, and Johnn McCain was not on Gregg's mention list.

18. That is beyond laughable. One of the most rabid supporters of deregulation
Edited on Mon Sep-29-08 11:53 AM by KCabotDullesMarxIII
is posing as a protector of the people's financial and fiscal interests.

William Schneider, CNN's own avuncular Prince of Darkness, was at it again the other night, spinning it that, heck, you know, it looks as if Senator McCain could get a bad knock-on effect in this whole business because of his association in the public's eyes with President Bush!

Not a word about McCain's having been a long-time architect and rabid supporter of financial deregulation (and doubtless universal deregulation where it intereferes with the self-enrichment of himself and his morally bankrupt, far right-wing friends - never mind the cost to the taxpayer, the environment and human life); the very cause of this economic chaos and fiscal mayhem. It was funny to see the young Englishwoman anchor trying to contain her laughter. Schneider was kind of embarrassed into nervously smiling a little with her at the end. Very comical.

A good cartoon in today's Mail, of a man at a cash-machine being told, "We are witholding a percentage of your cash withdrawal to help Mr Darling bail out the Bradford and Bingley." Kind of neatly focuses the reality. Though, at least, it seems they are going to nationalise B & B.

Edited on Mon Sep-29-08 12:57 PM by ann_american2004
'cause if its from Romney it must be true :sarcasm:

if that were true McCain would have been able to look Obama in the eye but he couldnt because Obama pwned him. Period.
After McCain stomped out he was out of the way they were able to do something productive.
Everyone knows Obama put him on the spot

I hope this is the end to us having to play mommy for the republican's messes. I am glad there will be oversights and regulations and I am glad the golden parachutes are ending. Wish there was more we could do - like NOT HAVE TO PAY -- but if it all goes tumbling down it doesnt do any of us any good. Say goodbye to everything you enjoy if that happens.

22. Oh Really!!!
As I type this the bailout bill is failing. So if McCain is taking credit for the changes that were made then he should have to accept the blame (depending on your opinion of the bailout to begin with) for it not passing. Even if you were against the bill his taking credit and then not being able to bring in the votes to pass tells me he can't even lead his own party much less the whole country.

31. I'm sure
I'm sure some of them voted against it because it was a bad bill to begin with, but many more of them voted against it because it was a 'government' bailout and they refuse to compromise their 'free market/no regulation' philosophy even if it appears to be totally discredited. If nothing gets passed and we go into a deep recession or even depression they have shot themselves in the foot big time. On the other hand if the market manages to correct itself with no intervention then their economic philosophy will rule for the foreseeable future. As I have stated before this also allows all those Senators and especially congresspeople of the Republican persuasion to run as 'mavericks' and tout that they stood up to big bad Bush and the big government Democrats. Of course it sorta sucks for McCain since he made such a big deal about coming back to Washington DC to get a deal done. Nice job John!!!
