Cadbury Recalls Chinese-Made Chocolates

HONG KONG (AP) -- British chocolate maker Cadbury said Monday that tests have ''cast doubt'' on the safety of its Chinese-made products and ordered a recall, the latest foreign company affected by China's tainted milk scandal.

Meanwhile, two U.S. food makers were investigating Indonesian claims that high traces of melamine were found in Chinese-made Oreos, M&Ms and Snickers.

Cadbury said in a statement it has recalled 11 chocolate products made at its factory in the Chinese capital Beijing, which are distributed in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia.

Tests ''cast doubt on the integrity of a range of our products manufactured in China,'' Cadbury said in the statement issued from its office in Singapore.

It was not immediately clear whether the tests revealed melamine, the industrial chemical at the center of China's recent milk scandal.

An Asia spokeswoman for Cadbury did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

my mother used to be an executive with Ross/ Abbott labs, and Similac was one of "her" products. When she was one of the people in charge they were very health and safety conscience, but that was well before BushCo came along...

and China is closer to Indonesia (where the US snacks were tested) than the US.

you'll see they have a wide variety of candy sourced from China. As far as I know, the "name brands" they sell are not, but the ones exclusive to OTC seem to be. Check the picture below showing the labelling for one of their products.

CADBURY has withdrawn 11 products, including chocolate eclairs sold in Australia, after tests had found they contained the industrial chemical at the centre of China's toxic milk scandal.

Last night, Cadbury confirmed preliminary tests had found melamine in some of its Chinese-made chocolates. A spokesman in Hong Kong said it was too early to say how much was in the chocolates. The British chocolate maker earlier said tests had "cast doubt" on the safety of its Chinese-made products but did not elaborate.

As revelations emerged that Australian food regulators were testing 50 Chinese milk-based products for melamine, Cadbury Asia Pacific announced it had begun a recall of all 180-gram bags of Cadbury Eclairs - the only product in Australia so far affected.

"Late this afternoon we notified our retailers who stocked that product to take the product off the shelves," a Cadbury spokesman, Daniel Ellis, said.
