Cadbury Recalls Chinese-Made Chocolates

HONG KONG (AP) -- British chocolate maker Cadbury said Monday that tests have ''cast doubt'' on the safety of its Chinese-made products and ordered a recall, the latest foreign company affected by China's tainted milk scandal.

Meanwhile, two U.S. food makers were investigating Indonesian claims that high traces of melamine were found in Chinese-made Oreos, M&Ms and Snickers.

Cadbury said in a statement it has recalled 11 chocolate products made at its factory in the Chinese capital Beijing, which are distributed in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia.

Tests ''cast doubt on the integrity of a range of our products manufactured in China,'' Cadbury said in the statement issued from its office in Singapore.

It was not immediately clear whether the tests revealed melamine, the industrial chemical at the center of China's recent milk scandal.

An Asia spokeswoman for Cadbury did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

1. When
will people stop dealing with China, especially on things that other people consume? I hope Cadbury gets its ass sued off, and other corporate pimps whoring off jobs to China get the message.

4. Note that these chocolates were sold in Asia & Australia
Cadbury is an international company.

I'd like to know though if Chinese "milk" is being used in products sold here. Better stay away from processed food. Eat local, eat organic.

8. Fair trade chocolate is very expensive. But, international factories that make
chocolate have cruel child labor laws. http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/cocoa/background.html

"Can you live on chocolate alone? Neither can the countless farming families that depend on cocoa for a living.

The six largest cocoa producing countries are the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Indonesia, Nigeria, Brazil, and Cameroon. Cocoa has especially significant effects on the economy and the population in these countries. For example, in Ghana, cocoa accounts for 40% of total export revenues, and two million farmers are employed in cocoa production. The Ivory Coast is the world's largest cocoa producer, providing 43% of the world's cocoa.

In 2000, a report by the US State Department concluded that in recent years approximately 15,000 children aged 9 to 12 have been sold into forced labor on cotton, coffee and cocoa plantations in the north of the country. A June 15, 2001 document (PDF 850kb) released by the Geneva, Switzerland-based International Labor Organization (ILO) reported that trafficking in children is widespread in West Africa. (For ILO definitions of these labor violations, see ILO Convention 182 on Child Labor ILO Convention 29 on Forced Labor.) "

Yes, I am talking hershey's mars m and m s pretty much all the major American chocolate brands come from horrible cruel child labor situations

42. For the most part, it's unknowing consumption that's the problem.
If you go to Oriental Trading Company's website

http://www.orientaltrading.com

you'll see they have a wide variety of candy sourced from China. As far as I know, the "name brands" they sell are not, but the ones exclusive to OTC seem to be. Check the picture below showing the labelling for one of their products.

Lots of teachers and kids' programs eager to stretch their classroom supply budgets buy from OTC because their prices are good.

32. Chinese milk scandal hits Cadbury
Source: Sydney Morning Herald

http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2008/09/29/cadburyecalirs_narrowweb__300x362,0.jpg

CADBURY has withdrawn 11 products, including chocolate eclairs sold in Australia, after tests had found they contained the industrial chemical at the centre of China's toxic milk scandal.

Last night, Cadbury confirmed preliminary tests had found melamine in some of its Chinese-made chocolates. A spokesman in Hong Kong said it was too early to say how much was in the chocolates. The British chocolate maker earlier said tests had "cast doubt" on the safety of its Chinese-made products but did not elaborate.

As revelations emerged that Australian food regulators were testing 50 Chinese milk-based products for melamine, Cadbury Asia Pacific announced it had begun a recall of all 180-gram bags of Cadbury Eclairs - the only product in Australia so far affected.

"Late this afternoon we notified our retailers who stocked that product to take the product off the shelves," a Cadbury spokesman, Daniel Ellis, said.
