UN experts tackle Iraq impasse

A United Nations electoral fact-finding team has arrived in Iraq to discuss a handover of political power.
The main task is to determine whether elections are possible by 30 June - the US deadline for a return to self-rule.
President Bush wants the new government selected by regional meetings, but Iraq's majority Shia Muslims are demanding direct elections this year.
It is the first official UN mission to Iraq since a bomb killed 22 people at the UN's Baghdad HQ last August.

1. Hopefully, they'll be safe in the "Green Zone"
Although travel to and from the Green Zone seems to be quite hazardous, by all accounts.

However, I doubt that the Shiites will accept anything short of direct elections (they seem to be intractable in this position), so this mission might be in vain...
