Obama increases lead over McCain slightly since debate(LAT/Bloomberg)
Source: LA Times

Democrat Barack Obama has made strides in convincing Americans that he can handle the toughest challenges facing the country, including the financial meltdown and international crises, according to a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg survey taken after Friday's presidential debate.

The poll of registered voters who watched the first showdown in Oxford, Miss., also showed a slight increase in Obama's lead over Republican John McCain.

The Illinois senator extended his advantage to 49% to 44%, compared with last week, when the same respondents gave him a 48% to 45% edge.

-----

Though more voters still see McCain as more knowledgeable, Obama was seen as more "presidential" by 46% of debate-watchers, compared with 33% for the Arizona senator.

The difference is even more pronounced among debate-watchers who were not firmly committed to a candidate: 44% said they believed Obama looked more presidential, whereas 16% gave McCain the advantage.

-----

After the debate, 43% of registered voters who saw the event said Obama had more "honesty and integrity," compared with 34% for McCain. A week ago, the same voters were evenly divided, with each candidate winning the trust of 40% of respondents.

1. but...but...but.... mccain is a "mavrick"
mccain's propping up the whole "mavrick" aspect as being a desirable trait has it's drawbacks.

being a maverick doesn't automatically translate to having good judgement, nor does it mean the "maverick" decisions are based on understanding a problem and available solutions.

mccain demonstrates his "maverick-ness" by lurching all over the place, and more often than not, having to backtrack. he does state he is "willing to take the lumps" - which is fine when the only one taking the "lumps" would be him - but as president - we all will be taking the lumps for any decision he makes

11. Let's substitute "unreliable," or "loose cannon,"
whenever we see the word "maverick" applied to John McCain. Same things.

He ought to come over to the side of the Light.

on edit:

I happen to think he's right. McCain's best was to tie Obama during the convention, and that was all show and no substance.

5. Oh My!
If STUPID Americans vote for such a LIGHT-WEIGHT and a MARXIST to boot, then our country is beyond screwed....it is OVER....never to come back.....and with our history of ABORTIONS, I think God has drawn back the cloak of grace that HE has bestowed on this country.

Seriously delusional

6. The MSM will never admit it, but Obama is running away with this thing..
Chuck Todd and Scarby just tried their damndest to figure out a way for McCain to get enough electoral votes and they couldn't do it.

9. Notice the need to use the unnecessary word "slightly" in the headline
If McCain's numbers had gone up, the headline would have screamed "McCain surges ahead!!111!!1" But this way, at least some people will misread it as Obama being "slightly ahead." This clumsily worded headline would even fit if, say, Obama's lead went from 30 points to 31.

10. To me, the debate looked like a draw,
but if he's widening his lead, I guess he won.

Gobama.

13. A draw on foreign policy is a win for Obama.
And he knows how to look someone in the eye and call bullshit.
