Governor Schwarzenegger goes fund raising despite pledge of reform
Governor goes fund raising despite pledge of reform

Christian Berthelsen, Chronicle Staff Writer
Friday, February 6, 2004

Sacramento -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, in the final weeks before the Oct. 7 recall election, pledged to introduce a "People's Reform Plan" that would bar the governor and members of the Legislature from raising campaign donations while working on the state budget.

But now, nearly a month after the new governor introduced his budget, he continues to jet around the state and the nation, seeking campaign donations of up to $500,000 apiece, becoming the most aggressive fund-raising governor in California's history.

And his reform proposal appears to be languishing.

With two weeks left before the deadline to introduce bills in the Legislature, Schwarzenegger has yet to submit the proposal. The administration has not yet selected a lawmaker to carry the bill. Both Democratic and Republican legislators on the committees with authority over the proposal say they have heard nothing about it from the administration.

1. check this out
:wtf:

Still another is scheduled for later this month in New York as the governor raises money for his campaign to persuade voters to approve his $15 billion deficit bond and balanced budget measure on March 2.

*snip*

The New York event carries a minimum entry price of $50,000 per couple and a requested donation of up to $500,000 to become a "co-chairman" of Schwarzenegger's California Recovery Team. Campaign finance experts said they had never before heard of a solicitation for that much money.

WHAT IS HE DOING FUNDRAISING IN NEW YORK???

3. Time for Cruz to step up and put this proposal before the legislature
Edited on Fri Feb-06-04 12:49 PM by FoeOfBush
Teh Lt Gov IS the Governor while the Governor is out of the state(hope that makes sense). Cruz should announce a press conference for the same time the fundraiser(but only an hour before the fundraiser) and take the opportuinty to carry forward one of Ahnold's pledges. It should go like this;

Lt Gov Cruz - I have called this PC to announce a special session of the legislature for this evening. The bill up for discussion and a vote will be the People's Campaign Reform Bill. It would disallow a sitting Governor from raising campaign funds until and unless a budget is in place that is balanced. I know I will have the support of Gov Schwarzengrabben because he made this one of his central campaign promises. He accused then Gov Davis of this and made it his goal to eliminate that from happening again. Gov Ahnold is not available for comment tonight as he is in New York raising campaign funds. Please follow me as I deliver the bill for the scheduled 12 minutes of debate before the voting. The bill signing will follow in the Governor's office.

2. He's probably just too busy
"opening up all the books" and seeing where Gray Davis and the Democrats wantonly squandered the state's money. I'm sure once he finds all the wasteful spending that is the cause of California's finacial crisis then he can get right on that fundraising/budget thingamajig...
