(Paul Martin's)CSL dodged $100M in taxes, Bloc MPs claim - CTV

Bloc Quebecois claimed in Thursday's Question Period that CSL dodged $100 million in Canadian taxes by registering some of its ships in Barbados.

"Won't the prime minister admit that his beautiful speeches on tax havens (should) read, 'do what I say, not what I do?'," asked Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe.

Finance Minister Ralph Goodale described the $100 million figure as a "figment of (the opposition's) imagination."

He said the government is determined to get fair taxation revenues for Canadians.

Bloc MP Pierre Paquette said Prime Minister Paul Martin intervened to make sure Barbados wasn't included in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development's 2000 list of tax haven countries - a country where CSL had paid income taxes of about 2.5 per cent, he said.

-$100 million seems like a difficult amount to hide, so it may be considerably less, but I'd like to hear Martin's comments on the places he chose to register his ships.

1. Martin's business makes that fuss about Chretien and the golf course
a few years ago look even sillier than it did at the time.

Martin doesn't have Chretien's "common guy" bonhomie to ply in a campaign. He'll look like what he is: a privileged, multimillionaire shipping magnate, whose concerns are not those of most Canadians.

2. It's not so much the dollar amount as the choice of registration points.
His choice to use flags of convenience really stinks.

4. The creepy part about Martin
The creepy part about Martin, and was especially noticeable with the phoney townhall ad his pals at the CBC ran for him this week on the National, is the obsessiveness about his pursuit of the PM and evoking his father all the time...

Firstly, it's the people who decide WHO is PM (not some ghost, a 'calling' or corp bagmen)--it really goes to the heart of his patrician tone

Secondly, it has a masonic quality to whole affair (his sons even went so far as to add Rt. Hon. to his stupid Boat...)

Just aside, if his boat and Rice's boat hook up...what would happen? Would they make little Zodiacs?
