GOP group compares Obama to Buchanan
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Republican group launched a new effort Wednesday to turn Jewish voters away from Barack Obama, an ad campaign that compares the Democratic presidential candidate to Pat Buchanan but offers scant evidence of their similarities.

The Republican Jewish Coalition is running an ad in dozens of Jewish newspapers that says Obama and Buchanan have views on Israel that are "dangerous, reckless and wrong." It quotes Buchanan as saying his views on Israel are a lot closer to Obama's than they are to those of GOP presidential nominee John McCain.

"Concerned about Barack Obama?" the ad says over a photo of Buchanan giving a thumbs up toward a photo of Obama. "You should be. His dangerous views on Israel have just been endorsed by Pat Buchanan."

Asked for examples of how they are the same, RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks suggested a call to Buchanan to ask the conservative commentator what he thinks. "All we're doing is printing Buchanan's words," he said. Brooks declined to reveal the cost of the ad campaign.

3. I wonder how these people feel about the Jews for Jesus guy at Palin's church?
They rationalized it away, I'm sure.

4. Obama should come back with this...
"Concerned about John McCain?" the ad says over a photo of McCain obviously aroused by Bush. "You should be. His dangerous views on the economy, Iraq and virtually all other issues important to Americans are virtually indistinguishable from Bush's."

Props to faygokid for the awesome Photoshop work!

5. Don't worry about it.
The Republican Jewish Coalition can't have more than three dozen members, nationally.

6. Some oppo is not worth the time you invest in it. For this one to work, the target has to know
something about Buchanan--which means they know that Buchanan is a racist, right wing isolationist nut job who only shares Middle Eastern policy with Obama because they both want the troops out of Iraq.

7. Republican Disintegration
The interesting thing is that for most moderate Republicans, Buchanan actually has a higher approval rating (or at least higher degree of respect) than Bush OR McCain. And before people get too down on Buchanan, consider that this kind of attack is basically "punishment" of Buchanan for his laudatory remarks about Obama's speech the night of the nomination - and his strong ambivalence toward Bush in the past and a whole host of issues, not just the war. Expect some time in the next two weeks for Buchanan to make the announcement that he is in fact supporting Obama for president.

9. I HOPE he doesn't come out supporting Obama!
That would do Obama no good whatsoever. And they are really completely opposite - and to be blunt I can't imagine Buchanan really supporting anyone whose skin isn't pure white.

I have been 'down on Buchanan' since I first heard of him, which was when he wrote something in defence of LePen some years ago. He is an extreme right-winger on social issues; a racist; and has even written stuff implying that Hitler wasn't all that bad. Just because he is against Bush, doesn't mean he's a good thing!

8. What a load of crap
Buchanan is an insane xenophobe. He opposes the war on Iraq (on isolationist grounds) and may be on that one issue be closer to Obama than McCain. But he seems to be practically in love with Palin!

Obama is not anti-Israel, and the Republican Jewish Coalition are loonies, and probably a very small group.
