McCain Picked for Iraq Intelligence Probe

Feb 5, 7:18 PM (ET)

By Steve Holland and Adam Entous
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush was expected to name Sen. John McCain, an Arizona Republican, to a bipartisan commission that will investigate flaws in U.S. intelligence used to justify the Iraq war, Republican sources said on Thursday.

Bush was expected to announce the creation of the commission on Friday. The panel would report back next year, after the November election. No such event was included on the president's official schedule for the day, although last-minute additions are typical of this administration.

Claims that Iraq had stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction were the main reason cited by Bush for the war, in which more than 500 U.S. troops have died.

McCain is a maverick who opposed Bush for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000 and is known for speaking his mind and taking on the administration. He broke party ranks to insist that Bush needed to have an independent commission look into prewar intelligence.

1. I'm kind of surprised by this pick
McCain is a supporter of the war, but he's not exactly Bush's biggest fan either.

18. I don't trust this pick
Mccain is severely compromised and has NO bipartisan credentials.

3. I don't believe bush* has the right to pick a commission.
It should be opposed. To hell with bush* and the train he rode in on. He has no credibility for bi-partisanship, why should he be given a pass on this? Lets see if the Democrats are still the party of cowards.

5. Agreed.
Bush* has no business appointing anyone for this activity. It will be a whitewash of the administration. Intelligence was wrong and Bush* was right. Yeah! Right!

7. Why let the criminal
appoint his own investigator? This makes no sense what so ever. Just a PR stunt the media is letting bush get away with.

8. I'm glad McCain is on it.
He has the intergrity to say the truth, even if it hurts his fellow party member.

11. McCain sold his integrity a long time ago
He can lie with the best of them.

Besides, isn't it a conflict of interest to appoint someone who was actively campaigning for you just one week ago? This whole 'independent' investigation is a farce only meant to delay anyone from asking W the real question, why did he lie about his reasons for invading Iraq?

15. Exactly, did you notice Kay and McCain were both very
outspoken in a manner which seemed not to support the pResident's view right before the announcement that they would be part of the investigation? (So there would be the appearance that the investigation was fair.)

13. McCain is campaigning for Bush*...
...and was FOR attacking Iraq from the beginning. In fact...he was among those who said it would be a 'cakewalk'.

- The White House shouldn't be allowed to have anything to do with this commission...as they are subject to investigation. They've already tied the hands of the 9-11 commission to the point where it has become an obvious whitewash.

14. I agree
I am a little nervous that McCain may be a Lord Hutton clone, but if McCain was able to survive Hanoi Hilton for 3 years, he certainly can deal with the pressure from the BFEE.

16. Bullshit...

McCain is a Repuke just like the rest. His supposed outrage at Bush is an act as it is never backed up with any real action.

This "investigation" will be a total sham. Why don't we let all people who are suspected of a crime pick their own investigators?

19. Integrity?
Don't think there is any evidence for than the fact that is sometimes an awkward customer and bull-headed. I see no reason to trust his pursuit of the truth.

17. I wondered why McCain was allowed to speak out
Think this was arranged ahead of time?

Let's just save some money and allow McCain to do the whole investigation by himself and give him a week to finish.

McCain is a maverick...

Please, like any good republican, he'll put the interest of the party over the interest of the country.
