Frist Vows Senate Will Block U.S. Gay Marriages
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist vowed on Thursday that the Senate would block any effort to legalize same-sex marriage, a day after Massachusetts' top court ruled the state must allow homosexuals to wed.

"I want to be very clear. We reject intolerance, we reject hatred. We must treat all our fellow citizens with civility and kindness," Frist, a Tennessee Republican, said in speech on the Senate floor. "But marriage should not be redefined by the courts and we in this body can't let it, we won't let it."


Massachusetts' Supreme Judicial Court, which last year struck down a state ban on same-sex marriages, on Wednesday said lawmakers must allow marriage for gay couples because anything less would make them "second-class" citizens.

Yet your willing to deny American Citizens their rights, but with kindness and not hatred. Tolerant that you will not let them marry. And civil you will not yell at them.

The only reason the RW is against gay marriage is because GAYS WANT IT!


No civilized, enlightened society feels the need to marginalize a particular sector of its society because of sexual preference.

None do. And none should.

But then, suggesting that the United States, in the year 2004 has attained the status of being "Enlightened" is a bit of a stretch.

This is an effort born of desperation. I've concluded all a long that the right wing necons will become desparate as they see all the crap they have done to America begin to unravel. Tax cuts for the rich, Iraq war, environmental raping, cronyism, leave no child educated everything ... and will try to fall back on hate, fear and division to maintain power.

Society has already changed. It is time for the neocon bible bangers to get with it. People are GAY! People are STRAIGHT! That is a FACT! It is part of the fabric of American society!! These isn't one gay person alive who is bent on undermining the fabric of family, morality and the bible. That is such BULLSHIT!!

Remeber these neocons are the same type of people that argued for continued bans on inter-racial marriages in the 60's. Yes the same type of people. Marriage has changed before and it will change again. We have been defining what marriage is for centuries. Rulers and governments have redefined marrige time and time again. And no one is better at it than America.

To continue to allow only certain people to receive the benefits of marriage is wrong. You can't discriminate against people. The courts know this and any bill set forth by the Senate will be defeated in the courts.

No wonder BUsh wanted all those right wingers on the bench. But even they will have a difficult time argueing for discrimination in this day and age.

What a fucking OUTRAGE!!!

Watch these right wing assholes flagulate themselves on this issue for the narrow minded bigots they represent. They will be remembered as another failed racist, bigot like Wallace. Only to be recalled as another example of America's intolerant, turbulent past.

GOOD BYE BILL FRIST!! Into the dark corner of American history along with the slavery, the KKK and all the other racists.

I think these senators should be the focus of our efforts against any amendment. Note that, apart from Edwards and Graham, who are retiring this year, I did not include any southern Democratic senator (the few who are left). It would be a close call. There are others that are possible abstentions or no votes, including the GOP senator Smith from Oregon. Normally, I would say PA's Spector was an option, except he's in a primary fight with a rightist. I do think Chafee and Snowe can be won on this issue. Other Democrats may capitulate to a bad position for electoral reasons.

24. If we cannot stop the amendment, we must provide an alternative.
Democrats must try to stop the amendment, but if there aren't the votes in either house of congress, then we must instead promote a counterproposal involving making DOMA more rigid or something of that sort--something that leaves the issue to the states still. I think this would provide acceptable political cover as did the original DOMA in 1996.
