Strong quake jolts Indonesia’s Papua

Temblor registers 6.8; no injuries in early reports

This developing story will be updated.HONG KONG - A strong earthquake hit Indonesia early Friday, seismologists in Hong Kong and the United States said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The magnitude 6.8 temblor struck at 6:05 a.m. (4:05 p.m. EST), and its epicenter was in western Papua, formerly Irian Jaya, about 1,400 miles east of Jakarta, the Hong Kong Observatory and the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The U.S. agency said the quake was centered 6 miles underground.

JAKARTA, Feb. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- The death toll in the earthquakes in Indonesia's Papua on Friday morning reached 22 people as of 1:10 p.m. local time (0100 GMT) and the figure could increase as thedamages following the earthquakes also happened in several villages in the city of Nabire.
