Rove: McCain attacks have gone “one step too far”
Source: by Mosheh Oinounou (embeds Fox)

Former Bush campaign guru Karl Rove said Sunday that both campaigns’ attacks have “gone one step too far,” adding that some McCain spots go “beyond the 100-percent-truth test.”

“Both campaigns ought to be careful about it. They ought to — there ought to be an adult who says, ‘Do we really need to go that far in this ad? Don’t we make our point and won’t we get broader acceptance and deny the opposition an opportunity to attack us if we don’t include that one little last tweak in the ad?’” Rove told Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday.

Rove, a Fox News contributor, has provided informal advice to the McCain campaign for months but singled out the GOP nominee today for recent attacks that he believes go beyond the pale. ...

I'm glad there was a link this time. He's trying to paint BOTH McCain and Obama as liars. His statement is misleading. He's trying to suck people in to thinking he's actually telling the truth this time, and by the end of the interview, has already planted doubts as to Obama's honesty. He figures if he paints both McCain and Obama as liars, the public would prefer a lying McCain to a lying Obama. Look past the gold paint and see/smell the turd.

This is exactly what he did with Kerry's war record.
Criticize Mccain for the obvious lies that he can't ignore and it gives him a bit of credence so that when he criticizes Obama for the same thing people must think they are as bad as each other. Even if the facts show that Obama has told the truth.

CHAPMAN JOINS 'THE ENOUGH CLUB'.... The Chicago Tribune's Steve Chapman, who had a column quoted in a McCain campaign ad this week, appears to have grown tired of the Republican nominee's tactics.

oliticians are not saints, and campaigns are not conducted under oath. We all expect a certain amount of deceit from people running for office, in the form of fudging, distortion, exaggeration and omission. But the McCain campaign's approach, as episode illustrates, is of an entirely different scale and character. It is to normal political attacks what Hurricane Ike is to a drive-through carwash. <...>

Why does McCain insist on running such a mendacious campaign? There is plenty an honest conservative might say in opposition to Obama.... But McCain has concluded that a fact-based case about Obama isn't enough to prevail in November. So he has chosen to smear his opponent with ridiculous claims that he thinks the American people are gullible enough to believe.

He has charged repeatedly that his opponent is willing to lose a war to win an election. What's McCain willing to lose to become president? Nothing so consequential as a war. Just his soul.

29. Rove: McCain went 'too far' in ads
Edited on Sun Sep-14-08 06:37 PM by Meeker Morgan
Source: CNN

Former Bush adviser Karl Rove said Sunday that Sen. John McCain had gone "one step too far" in some of his recent ads attacking Sen. Barack Obama.

Rove has leveled similar criticism against Obama.

"McCain has gone in some of his ads -- similarly gone one step too far," he told Fox News, "and sort of attributing to Obama things that are, you know, beyond the '100 percent truth' test."

The Obama campaign immediately leaped on the quote.

"In case anyone was still wondering whether John McCain is running the sleaziest, most dishonest campaign in history, today Karl Rove -- the man who held the previous record -- said McCain's ads have gone too far," said campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor, in a statement sent to reporters minutes after Rove's on-air comments. Rove masterminded both of President Bush's successful White House bids.

Rove said both candidates need to "be careful" about their attacks on each other.

49. Rove is worried !
And no wonder. McCain and Co. have gone too far with their ads and have opened the door to a backlash. The Obama campaign is seen as in a fighting back position, and if they come out swinging, firing both barrels, they will not be faulted. After all, they're only defending themselves and to do any less would turn off supporters, both committed and potential. This is exactly what both Gore and Kerry should have done, they failed and were percieved in the eyes of many as quitters. I remember asking myself what both Gore and Kerry might do in a crisis situation if elected, and was left wondering. Obama has to show he has the fortitude to wage a hard campaign. Let McCain come out with his lies and feeble attempts and let Obama hit back twice as hard with the truth. And he has more than enough ammunition now that Mccain has put Palin on the scene.

50. McCain has already done his undermining of Obama
Obama has yet to undermine McCain. Now the Republicans want to stop all negative ads.

They attack. Then they want all attacks to be stopped.

That is another reason Obama should have attacked first. Hit them before they know what's coming and throw them off their game.

Obama had better not agree to a high road campaign with these low road liars. It's just a trick.

I mean in terms of getting the desired results with the American public (personal values and ethics are another story). I especially don't believe Rove thinks the attacks have gone too far.
