Fey is Palin as 'SNL' Starts Season

By Roger Catlin on September 14, 2008 12:00 AM
They didn't waste time getting in Tina Fey as Sarah Palin in the season opener of "Saturday Night Live." She was in the opening sketch that preceeds the titles, in a smart bit with last season's best received political character, Amy Poehler as Hillary Clinton.

The ploy was a public service announcement of the two decrying sexism in politics, but it also served as a way to bring back the two who shared the desk on Weekend Update for a few seasons (before Fey went off to "30 Rock": Poehler will be gone by midseason too because of her pregnancy).

I was ambivalent about Fey as Palin - it wasn't such a hard impersonation, especially with that odd accent, that any woman on their talented cast could do. But she nailed it in a way that few other people could do -- from that strange Northern accent to the way she looked out of the side of her eyes to that weird thing she does with her mouth that I hadn't even noticed before. She was more Palin than Palin (and replay of this smart sketch on news channels in the next could of days, Fey will be seen more widely than Palin on TV).

- snip -

And so they demonstrate:

Clinton: I believe that diplomacy should be cornerstone of any foreign policy.
Palin: And I can see Russia from my house.
Clinton: I believe global warming.is caused by man.
Palin: And I believe it's just God huggin' us closer.
Clinton: I don't agree with the Bush Doctrine.
Palin: I don't know what that is.

2. The crowd loved it
Right at the beginning and then there was another outburst when she said the word, "so" in that northern accent.

7. this was simply THE BEST version of Sarah Palin
what's so ironic, is even the comedic sketch shows her more
normal and more human than the nutjob she is in real life.

tina fey does a great job, but no matter what, she cannot capture that annihilation loving christian armageddon loving crazy woman.

but she does a pretty good impression and it's scary even our funny impression of Sarah is less scary than the real thing.

11. Phil Hartman
As Bill Clinton. And of course Will Ferrel as Bush. I always thought he should have stayed in that role since most of his movies we flops.

`SNL' debuts with Fey as Palin, Phelps as host

By JAKE COYLE – 4 hours ago
NEW YORK (AP) — Live from New York ... it's Tina Fey as Gov. Sarah Palin.
After wild conjecture over whom would play Sen. John McCain's running mate on "Saturday Night Live," Fey returned to her old show for an opening sketch featuring her and Fey's former "Weekend Update" co-host Amy Poehler as Sen. Hillary Clinton.

The NBC comedy show's season premiere opened Saturday with a "nonpartisan message" where the two pleaded for an end to sexism in the presidential campaigns — which have seen Palin enjoy sudden popularity after Clinton's loss to Sen. Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination.

"I didn't want a woman to be president, I wanted to be president," said Poehler, reprising her caricature of Clinton.

Many have said Fey bears a resemblance to Palin, a comparison alluded to in the sketch. A frustrated Clinton eventually broke down, complaining about Palin's ease of ascendance and her "Tina Fey glasses."

A few digs were made about Palin being less experienced than Clinton. As Poehler's Clinton bragged about her foreign policy experience, Fey's Alaskan governor exclaimed: "I can see Russia from my house!"

When Poehler said she disagreed with the Bush Doctrine, Fey's Palin acknowledged, "I don't know what that means" — a reference to Palin's apparent confusion on the subject in her first major interview earlier this week on ABC.
Poehler wrapped up the sketch: "In conclusion, I invite the media to grow a pair. And if you can't, I will lend you mine."

"SNL" returned early this fall for its 34th season in part to capitalize on the presidential campaign. The show has historically had particular relevance in its political parodies.
Last season, a sketch making fun of the media's fawning over Obama was seen as causing the press to rethink its coverage. In 2000, Darrell Hammond's impression of Al Gore in the debates made the phrase "lock box" ubiquitous.

14. Fey's certainly prettier than Palin.
I do not understand the people who find Palin attractive. She's a blurry copy of a copy of a copy of Tina Fey.
