Palin says she is ready to step in as president
Source: msnbc

FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Thursday that she didn't blink when Republican John McCain asked her to be his running mate, a surprise selection that shook up the presidential race.

"I didn't hesitate, no," she told ABC's Charlie Gibson in her first televised interview since accepting the Arizona senator's invitation to be on the Republican ticket two weeks ago.

"I answered him 'yes' because I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can't blink, you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we're on, reform of this country and victory in the war, you can't blink. So I didn't blink then even when asked to run as his running mate," said the 44-year-old Palin, a governor who has been in office less than two years.

Asked if she felt ready to step in as vice president or perhaps even president if something happened to the 72-year-old McCain, Palin said: "I do, Charlie, and on January 20, when John McCain and I are sworn in, if we are so privileged to be elected to serve this country, we'll be ready. I'm ready."

Gibson also read Palin a comment she made in her former church — "Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God" — and asked whether she thought the United States was fighting a holy war.

Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 06:01 PM by ryanmuegge
I guess Obama's afraid of looking like an elitist, but this is important. Or maybe our candidate's just a fucking wimp. Maybe both.

We're fucking losing. It's time to take some chances. What the fuck is it with our party? In our party, a candidate only gets one chance to be the nominee, and none of them ever want to make the most of it. If Obama doesn't take chances, he's going to lose. That means trying out some attacks that may not work. Hell, it may even mean sacking Biden as VP and bringing Hillary in at the last second (under the guise of some bullshit excuse, of course). This is why Republicans win: they are willing to do whatever it takes. Hell, I think we should pull a Ken Blackwell or Jeb Bush if we have Democratic leadership in the right states. Cheat. Fuck it. This country cannot stand a Palin presidency under any fucking circumstances.

58. We're not losing.
1) The polls are all over the place, from a dead heat to our side winning handily. The occasional outlier predicting a McCain victory is meaningless.
2) People who communicate via cell phone or internet-based phone aren't reflected in the polls. That's mostly young people, who favor Obama overwhelmingly.

To your other point-- get off the Hillary wagon. That's not an option. If she wanted to be VP, she should have played nice during the primaries. In addition, the only candidate in my lifetime to switch VP nominees LOST. How indecisive do you want him to look?

65. I have not seen any post-RNC polls showing us winning handily.
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 07:23 PM by ryanmuegge
In a country where elections are this close, being down three or four points when doing a meta-analysis of the post-RNC polling is devastating. Yeah, in one or two polls we may only be down two points, but that's getting our asses handed to us in a country where elections are so close.

About your second point, that's what they said last time around.

Look, I'm no Hillary supporter. I just want to us to win (officially) for once. Americans are ignorant. The public pays such litten attention to the news that most would forget who Biden is within a week of him dropping out. The switch may appear too transparent, but the transparency of McCain cynically picking a woman wasn't enough to keep him from gaining the lead, so I don't think that is applicable here (though Obama does not have the luxury of getting uniformly positive coverage from the corporate media, so who knows?). Either way, Obama's ran a ridiculous, weak campaign, much like John Kerry before him. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if the same crew are running it. They should never work again.

If we ran a ticket as flawed as the Palin/McCain ticket, the Republicans would eat us alive, but that's because they actually try to fucking win.

Look, I hope you're right and I'm wrong, but this is looking eerily like 2004, when Bush's "post-convention bounce" in the polls never went away, and it allowed them to get it close enough to "win" through fraud in Ohio.

This is what worries me: right now, Obama only shows 273 EV. Worse, we're seeing Ohio and Virginia both flip around considerably.

A positive note: Florida is still in a dead heat.

75. Yeah, I've noticed that about those states on that site too. What's even scarier
is that many of the state-by-state polls aren't recent enough to fully show the "Palin effect."

People who are denying that something is going on here are being foolish. The question is not an "if," but it should be "what are we going to do about it?"

Any sane person with even the most basic knowledge of what it must take to fill that role should suffer some serious trepidation and soul-searching before they presume they are ready. Her firm belief that experience as a small-town mayor and governor of a small state makes her ready, surely tells us how hopelessly unready and unsuitable she is.

But of course, Georgie was totally ready too. How hard could it be? You just can all the people you don't like, or who might disagree with you, order up some weekly happy reports, and you're ready to go.

49. She says she's ready. I guess that settles that. Why bother holding elections?
If this is a sample of the softball questions lobbed by Charlie Gibson to Caribou Barbie, then I'm not surprised.

52. She's too stupid and egotistical to understand what it means.
This is what you get from a stupid, egotistical, falsely confident politician who would rather ruin the country than to admit that skills and intellect are lacking.

Palin is someone you'd pick up at a bar and make her a CEO because you liked her cup size-- and this
has happened!

McCain is not just the same but also insane for picking a stupid bimbo like Palin.

They will both drive us off a cliff if elected, but will blame Americans for it.

We can't let this insane team get within 100 miles of the White House. Palin is just a stupid bimbo with zero intellect, but she knows how to dress and put on makeup. Perfect for McCain, but not
for America.

That woman is determined to start WWIII.

We've got to send her back to Alaska-- if they'll take her.

55. Didn't anyone else notice...
...that they cut her answers short in a couple of spots and gave us alot of shots of the back of her head. It seemed like they were hiding her reaction from us, I'm surprised they didn't cut out the eye twitch. She looked scared and really stiff too.

not wanting to be drowned in 9/11. I hope this gets played in full on tomorrow's news. If not, I hope it gets posted on DU.

70. What does a VP do every day?
Politico points out that McCain's VP pick dissed the job only a month ago:

In an interview just a month ago, she dissed the job, saying it didn't seem "productive."

In fact, she said she didn't know what the vice president does.

Larry Kudlow of CNBC's "Kudlow & Co." asked her about the possibility of becoming McCain's ticket mate.

Palin replied: "As for that VP talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day? I'm used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we're trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question."
