Man Charged With Threatening Councilman (New Case)

NEW YORK -- Two days after a political opponent gunned down a councilman inside City Hall, police arrested a man for allegedly threatening to shoot and kill another councilman.

Julio Abreu, 44, of Queens, was arrested Friday morning without incident at his home, police said. Abreu allegedly threatened Councilman Hiram Monserrate, who represents parts of Queens. Abreu was being held at the Queens courthouse Friday afternoon awaiting arraignment.

Abreu was in police custody and could not immediately be reached for comment. It was not immediately clear if he had retained a lawyer

Monserrate, reached by telephone, said Abreu works for Luis Jimenez, who is running against him in the Democratic primary. Jimenez could not be reached for comment because his telephone answering machine would not accept any more messages.
