TORONTO -- Canada's prime minister dissolved Parliament on Sunday and called an early election next month in hopes of strengthening his Conservative minority government's hold on power.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper's party needs to win an additional 28 seats to have a majority in Parliament. Although he has played down that possibility, polls in recent days indicate his right wing party has a chance to do so.

The Oct. 14 election will be Canada's third ballot in four years.

The Conservatives unseated the Liberal Party in 2006 after nearly 13 years in power, but as a minority government the Conservatives have been forced to rely on opposition lawmakers to pass legislation and adopt budgets.

2. It's not early enough for me
Harper has been a perfectly predictable disaster.

AND, as an added touch of hypocrisy, Harper is IGNORING the date of his own "fixed term" law.

He's breaking his own law by calling the election so soon.

3. I thought Harper locked elections in every 4 years!
But, he's merely emulating his Pal Bush who uses our Constitution as toilet paper!

4. It's all in the polls...
The polls show Harper is better trusted than Stephan Dion(Liberal) or Jack Layton(New Democrats) are, so it's time for Harper to make his move...
We watch CBC TV, being close to the border, and they say it was an expected move.

5. The October surprise
Edited on Sun Sep-07-08 11:40 AM by oldskool
The North American Union? The Amero dollar has been printed. 20
years ago if someone said European Union you were a conspiracy
nut. Secret meetings in the US house of representatives in
spring 08'. This is a uni-lateral push for globalization.
There are civil wars across the world right now.Governments
are being thrown, president's being impeached. Worldwide
newspapers are reporting this. Our military presence is not
liked in these counties.5 US nuke's missing from US arsenal.
Another Iran contra scandal. If you don't believe me try your
web browser. History is repeating itself for a reason. The
administration and candidates have been meeting with Mexico
and Canada,EU,etc.... Religion,race,sexism,political
correctness,patriotism,administration leaks,energy
crisis,economic issues,crashing markets,corporate bail
outs,etc... are being used against us. But no
accountability,Why is this? To deeply divide our country just
like around the world. And everyone is stuck in the gotcha
politics again. Why is this? The main attraction, distraction.
Our government corporation leaders are being outed for their
corruption as we speak both parties. Things are going to get
crazy real fast. Not trying to scare anyone. Just trying to
warn and educate people. We can get through this. Take it for
what it's worth.

9. I'm expecting status quo ante, myself
Nobody's really been able to do much of anything through this whole government. Harper's been an ineffectual disaster, yes, but there isn't that much for alternatives. I like the NDP, but they'll never have a substantial chance at forming a government here - though I usually like the pressure they can put on the other parties, like they've done in Nova Scotia quite a bit. The Greens would need a miracle to elect more than one or two MPs, and I can't stand most of their politics anyway. The Liberals are the primary opposition, but Dion lately makes Pelosi look like Leonidas.

I'm also expecting more American-style campaigning here; I'm seriously considering simply voting for the first party that can describe its plan without reference to the others, because I'm already sick of attack-only campaigns. %P

Just another of about 1,000,000 reasons to be terrified.

and this is just a prediction. Someone like Kucinich or Paul
"the fringe guys" who believe in the constitution
will be elected. They would bring the real change to
Washington and are real patriots. They are some of the only
ones who want accountability. The market will crash first, the
government will follow. And this will be their excuse for the
NAU. But I think they will be outed before this happens.
