A man is under arrest in Washington after an improvised explosive device, a rifle and some ammunition were allegedly found in his jeep, Capitol Police said Friday.

The man stopped to ask police for directions near the Capitol building at about 11 a.m. EDT Friday, at the intersection of 2nd and Independence Avenue Southeast, according to Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider.

The officer responding noticed a rifle case on the car seat and inspected the jeep, discovering the IED, rifle and ammunition. A canine unit was enlisted to help.

"They've all been rendered safe right now because they're in the custody of Capitol Police," Schneider told reporters at a briefing Friday.

8. Or a Molotov Cocktail
Even an M-80 firecracker would qualify as an IED.

25. So will a gasoline can
The tern IED is to broad, it is so broad as to be meaningless. The IED maybe something harmful, or something harmless (and maybe both, i.e. harmless if used to carry extra gasoline for the Jeep, Harmful is meant as an explosive device i.e. attached to something the sets it on fire). Now a gas can can explode in its own in the right circumstances, and if you make adjustments to the can and the gasoline, thus we need more information then an IED, the term "pipe-bomb" would give us more date to make a decision on for then we can say it is more then a gasoline can.

If three quarters of this site's adult population didn't know at least someone in their youth who made something the American news media would scream "OMG IED WTF!" over today, I'll eat the nearest hat.

then the Justice Dept. blows it off.

Nope, only Repub. targets count.

And what is with this IED story?
Anybody ever ever hear about an IED being SEEN in this country?

I am really suspicious of this story.

16. Interesting, I work in DC, at Penn & 22nd Street, so
I checked WTOP's website to see if they had any information on this. WTOP is DC's all news radio station. I didn't see anything about an arrest near the Capitol. It will be interesting to see what happens. Asking a cop in DC for directions? Oy - the guy was definitely from out of town.

23. what a non-story
So the guy was going hunting in Virginia and had a firecracker with him. The real story is probably that this is another story of fascist cops exceeding their authority.

24. Exactly what was the composition of the so-called "IED"?
Given the fact modern American cops are prone to self-serving mass hysteria I'll reserve judgement until they prove that it was an actual IED and not something more benign.

26. My money is on a gasoline can.
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 11:25 PM by happyslug
Jeep owners are nuts, they put 5 gallon steel gas cans anywhere on their Jeep "Just in case they run out of Gas" while four-wheeling someplace, but the Reuters Story said a "Grenade". Again I seen Jeep Owners, and you can buy "Grenades" which do NOT explode (or contain any explosives) in many gun and sporting good stores (and over the internet). Lets see that the "Grenade" is before we jump to any charges.

28. Initial radio reports yesterday indicated it was a grenade like
device that was disarmed.

U.S. Capitol Police said they found a hand grenade, two loaded firearms and other "items of concern" in a Jeep Cherokee driven by a 27-year-old man who was arrested yesterday morning near the Library of Congress.

The suspect, identified as Christopher S. Timmons, of Orange, Va., was arrested at Second Street and
