U.S. Special Forces Strike In Pakistan
Source: CBS News

Pakistan's top security officials on Wednesday were searching for clues that a "moderately important terrorist target" may have been hit when U.S. and/or NATO forces attacked three houses in a remote part of the country's border region with Afghanistan.

As many as 15 people were killed in the early morning strike Wednesday.

This was a commando raid by U.S. special operations forces - the first known use of ground troops inside Pakistan - in an attempt to kill or capture a high value target, reported CBS News national security correspondent David Martin. Until Wednesday, all known attempts to kill terrorist leaders operating out of Pakistan had been conducted by unmanned drones.

1. You don't suppose they're finally getting around to dealing with bin Laden, do you?
Bush said he didn't care where he was, but the guy did attack us.

They must be getting desperate at this point if they plan on taking him out...no doubt in hopes it will help their chances in the election.

4. Maybe they're afraid the ice is thawing.
Personally, I think he's been dead for years.

With advanced renal failure, if he's not in Peshawar then he's pretty much dead.

6. This is a huge deal. Even more important than Palin's baby.
Pakistan is erupting over this and one gets the feeling not enough people are paying attention.

9. This is a huge deal
That's the point. It was a bad move. Pakistani forces are sure to be bound for the area. Diplomats to be called in. Major power suffle going on there anyhow. They are seriously pissed.

Will they get told to hand over their nukes - in equally 'freindly' terms?

7. BBC link on story
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7599787.stm

The BBC's Barbara Plett in Islamabad says this would be the third such attack in three days, including an unprecedented ground assault allegedly carried out by American commandos.

In recent months US forces have stepped up unilateral strikes on Taleban and al-Qaeda targets in Pakistan's tribal areas.

They say Pakistan - a key US ally in the "war on terror" since 2001 - is not doing enough to stem the flow of insurgents across the border into Afghanistan.

Pakistani security officials suspect the Americans are trying to hit senior al-Qaeda targets ahead of forthcoming US presidential elections, our correspondent says.
