Obama stirs up outsourcing issue again
Source: Times of India

4 Sep 2008, 1347 hrs IST,PTI

WASHINGTON- US Presidential hopeful Barack Obama once again touched on the ticklish issue of outsourcing and while vowing to end tax breaks to companies that ship works overseas conceded that all lost jobs could not be redeemed.

Promising to retain as well as create more jobs for the Americans, the Democratic nominee said while all lost jobs cannot be redeemed, further movement can be halted by giving incentives to companies investing in the country.

"Not all jobs that have left are going to come back. We can stop some of them that are already leaving by stopping to give tax breaks to companies that are shipping jobs overseas and saving those tax breaks for investing in plants and equipment right here in the US," Obama said at a campaign stop in Ohio.

Maintaining that the issues of energy are going to be the "centrepiece of re-building manufacturing in the US", Obama said having energy as one of its main economic planks will ensure creation of millions of jobs as there are growing energy needs in emerging economies like India and China.

Snip~ "In his opening remarks Senator Obama had his standard refrain on outsourcing, a theme that he and his campaign have been hammering away in a state like Ohio that has taken a hard hit economically, especially in the manufacturing sector."

You go, Obama!

1. The Indian Press is paying close attention to this.
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 08:28 AM by Tandalayo_Scheisskop
As well they should. That said, look for Infosys, Tata and others to start sinking long green into the McCain campaign. When that happens, it should be noted and trumpeted.

On edit: Interestingly, some of the Indian Press is sympathetic to the Obama position. This is more than a little interesting. Sure wish there was a journalist on the ground in India who would follow up on that. But alas...

12. Wow - "Double F**k" the Third World.
Our Democratic approach to world poverty has changed a lot since I was a young man.

Do we even have a policy to deal with Third World poverty or is it: America - first, America - second and America - third?

7. There needs to be a move by government to get more manufacturing in this country, and ...
To Keep Manufacturing in this country. We just lost Vise-grip to the Chinese. What a terrible shame. Good jobs, good products all leaving the US for the cheaper labor costs of China, and the products coming out of China, time and time again, are lower quality, and more dangerous, sharp edges, cheaper wiring, if electrical, cheaper rivets, it goes on and on. This is criminal against our country that those in power are letting our Manufacturing go. The corporate salaries of the big wigs are insane, and the wages of the factory workers are not as high as the corporate big wigs make them out to be in all of these cases. Labor has value. If America is going to survive in the 21st Century we need to return manufacturing to this country. We are going to become a third world nation, if we keep these policies up. We cannot have a world where American Dollars are going overseas, and we are spending more than we are making.

I do not even like Capitalism, yet I am better at it than the majority of the people. But what is happening in our nation economically, does not even work along with the ideas of the Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith. What is happening is the sending of dollars overseas, and us becoming steadily poorer. We are deeply experiencing the intended/unintended consequences of outsourcing, and high debt. The dollar is decreasing in value, people are becoming poorer, and American Corporations are being bought out by foreigners. Even the honest Publicans are seeing what is happening. Do we charge the 8% to 14% tariff that China charges on our products? NO! WE buy 2 times more than they buy from us. We do not tariff their products, but they still tariff ours. Whoever is determining that Free, globalized trade is the panacea, obviously does not have any real concern for Our Nation, and obviously these people think it is an acceptable loss that the US is becoming poorer, and is on the verge of bankruptcy. This is not an acceptable loss. We need to remove everyone of these lying or wrong, hateful or incorrect people from political power in the US. Their agenda has the consequence of making us poorer.

About half of these Free Traders have an ideal, which on the surface is noble, help the rest of the world to become wealthier, but please see things deeper. Yes, India, and China are having an economic resurgence, but at the price of making us poorer. Also, you are an American, and you have positions of power in the US government, should not your first concern be to the US Citzen. I do think that the world needs many things, including living wages for all of the peoples of the world, but anyone that is in our country with political power, must, and needs to attend to the People of this Nation First, and Primarily.

The whole ideal of making the Chinese worker wealthier, and hence become able to desire a democratic life, thus changing the Gov. of China-That will never happen. The Half of Free Traders that I am speaking to now, that were/are not trying to break the back of American Labor, you guys were dead wrong with this assumption and strategy.

To the other Half of Free Traders, the ones who vote Publican. The ones who Hate American Labor. You are Traitors. Plain and Simple. You should not be allowed to live in this nation. You have no loyalty to this nation, and you are simply greedy, selfish, lying, tyrants. You are not the contributors to this nation. You Hoard your wealth. And, in my opinion, do not deserve your wealth because of your methods and hoarding.

24. Bravo!
well said I had a similar debate with someone recently I just don't think most Americans connect the dot on this issue. Right now economy is so troubling because there is crap load of money *see the 371 billionaires worth a combined 1.1 trillion dollars* being made but it's not generating more American jobs, better products, better pay for workers, etc.

21. Why can't people see this as a National Security issue?
Suppose one day we need more computer chips for all our high tech gadgets (cars, planes, computers, weapons). Suppose the Chinese (or whoever) are pissed at us and say no? Then what?

Same thing with everything else we no longer make like clothes, for example.

Or maybe some new war starts and our shipping lines are cut off (like rubber shipments in WWII, for example). How can anyone who truly cares about this country deliberately leave us so vulnerable?

Unfortunately, this seems to be becoming the norm in this day and age. Let's hope that Obama can begin to turn this unfairness around.
