McCain Camp Knocks Down Enquirer's Palin (Affair) Rumor
Source: CBS News

John McCain’s campaign threatened legal action against the National Enquirer today for running a story about McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin, allegedly having an affair with her husband’s business partner.

“The smearing of the Palin family must end. The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie,” said McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt.

“The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it.”

The Enquirer also alleges that Palin unjustly fired a public safety official while she was governor of Alaska, but the story is based entirely on unnamed sources. The Enquirer has also paid sources in the past to speak with them, something mainstream media outlets do not do.

This is like when SNL said that Cary Grant was gay.

Grant said he was going to sue SNL out of existence.

Lorne Michaels said, "Fine, we'll see you in court".

Guess what?

Listen to this, from Associated Content

"The article currently is not on the National Enquirer's Web site. The country's #1 supermarket tabloid apparently means to make fodder out of the sexual peccadilloes of John McCain, as the Web site features an article on McCain's cheating on his first wife."

get what they should have been getting; criticized and put through it. McCane has had it easy for the start and if they are going to give him all the media coverage, well it might as well be done with the facts.

“The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it.” Actually, what WE REJECT, is republican fascist and we do not want Bush the squeal.

It also the Enquirer, so who really gives a shit. They drag everyone through the mud.

50. If the NE prints it..
.... you can bet it is either true or their reason to believe it is true will stand up in a court case.

I was criticized a lot when I asserted that Edwards probably did have that affair, because I knew the history of the NE. They got sued and lost once, and their editor/publisher decided to be a lot more careful about what they publish.

If NE publishes it, it is 95% or better likely that it is a fact.

They lack "standing".

Serena Joy or her cuckold, Todd, CAN sue. Doesn't mean they have a snowball's chance on hell of winning, however. NE has an army or attorneys vetting every story like this. They learned their lesson with Carol Burnett, if I recall.

Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 06:03 PM by Liberalatus
I sometimes think they WANT the Democrats to inherit the country in its current state. They know that now is the safest time to let us in office. With the deficit as bad as it is, we really cannot financially support a lot of programs that we would like to implement, without HEAVY condemnation of fiscal irresponsibility from their side. Even if we fix the deficit, like Bill Clinton did after Dumb and Dumber, we will still be criticized for taxing "people" (rich) to death. It is almost a lose/lose with Iraq/Afghanistan. No matter what we do, we will get nothing but criticism. If we don't drill, we get hammered. If we do, it won't solve anything. Its actually quite unfair, the uphill battle we will have to climb just to "break even" if Barack wins. Unless Barack pulls off a MIRACULOUS 4 years, he might be finished for re-election in 4 years. I feel Repugs might be indifferent in this election as to whether or not they win. I think they are already planning for 2012, which would explain why the MSM has been on "lite" mode for this election. That's why we need to expose Palin NOW, and not let her get 4 years of experience behind her (probably in Congress). I shudder at the thought of a Palin/Hillary ticket in 4 years, especially following a "failed" Obama/Democrat presidency. I think Obama can handle it, but never underestimate their ability to misrepresent and frame reality any way they see fit.

46. The only way that we can protect the Dems from getting stuck with the bill,
is to start prosecuting Republicans for what they did to this country. Only then can you slow them down and maybe stop them from pilfering our local, state and federal governments. Because, if the Dems think they're going to stop operating business as usual, they fucking deserve to get their asses kicked in.

they know that just the "suggestion" of a story is often enough to sway the average person's mind, if only a little. You could destroy someone completely just by bombarding people with false story after false story, repeated ad nauseum. EVEN if none if it were true, AND even if every single one of them was discredited. Businesses use this, Rove knows it works, and uses this method, combined with the MSM. They know it works, and that's why they have to stop it at all costs.

Not to say its not true, or that we would stoop as low as they do...

the next time someone says that we are picking on her, tell them this (thank you to this story for sending me to the national enquirer where I would never have gone otherwise!). this also debunks the freepers cry that she announced this first and then we attacked:

"The ultra-conservative governor’s announcement about her daughter’s pregnancy came hours after The ENQUIRER informed her representatives and family members of Levi Johnston, the father of Bristol’s child, that we were aware of the pregnancy and were going to break the news.

In a preemptive strike Palin released the news, creating political shockwaves.

The ENQUIRER has also learned that Palin’s family is embroiled in a vicious war that is now exposing her darkest secrets, threatening to destroy her political career."

51. Huff Post: McCain Camp Battles National Enquirer Over Alleged Palin Affair
McCain Camp Battles National Enquirer Over Alleged Palin Affair

John McCain's presidential campaign is threatening a lawsuit against the National Enquirer over a print edition story the tabloid ran today alleging that Gov. Sarah Palin has had an extramarital affair with her husband's business partner.

The allegation would normally be dismissed by political observers as the random musings of a supermarket tabloid -- indeed, the McCain campaign said as much in its statements on Wednesday -- except that the paper has built up a reservoir of legitimacy following its earlier reporting on the John Edwards affair.

In a statement to the Huffington Post, a spokesman for the paper, who promised a larger report next week, tapped into that pool of quasi-respect.

"The National Enquirer's coverage of a vicious war within Sarah Palin's extended family includes several newsworthy revelations, including the resulting incredible charge of an affair plus details of family strife when the Governor's daughter revealed her pregnancy. Following our John Edwards' exclusives, our political reporting has obviously proven to be more detail-oriented than the McCain campaign's vetting process. Despite the McCain camp's attempts to control press coverage they find unfavorable, The Enquirer will continue to pursue news on both sides of the political spectrum."

Clearly, this is a touchy matter. Already, rumors that Palin's youngest son was actually the son of her daughter were batted down. And the McCain campaign has strenuously insisted that the current crop of insinuations is not only false but also potentially libelous.

53. Sounds as if the NE is reporting it as an "incredible" charge. So how is it libel?
Like it or not, the news media CAN feport on rumors as long as they do not make the case that the rumor is true.The McCain camp is crazy to react this strongly to the mere mention of a rumor. And it is not very credible for a spokesperson to deny a rumor out of hand - what is their basis for knowing it cannot be true? Did they ask Sarah?

55. Palin denies affair rumours
Source: The Age

The McCain campaign has vigorously denied reports that Republican vice-presidential pick Sarah Palin had a steamy extramarital affair with her husband's business partner.

The story, which appeared just hours before Mrs Palin was due to address the Republican convention today, was branded "scurrilous" by McCain chief strategist Steve Schmidt, who said it was "a vicious lie".

"The smearing of the Palin family must end," he said.

"The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Governor Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie. "

"The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it."

I don't think much of Sarah, but seeing shots of her family tonight made me feel for them. Track looked overwhelmed -- this must be surreal for them. And I saw a pic on CNN when the family gathered on stage, and Todd was in the background holding the baby, and looking down and smiling at him. It was touching. So for their sakes, I hope the affair rumor isn't true.

Just turns my stomach. There is no good reason a baby with health problems should be paraded out amongst thousands of people from all over the country and exposed to who knows what kind of germs. Despicable.

However, the presentation of Palin's baby was quite different than that of Obama's kids. Sorry you didn't see it that way.

Reasons to oppose Sarah Palin for public office, especially national office:
  • Sarah Palin is a global warming denier;
  • she is in the pocket of big oil;
  • she is some one who thinks creationism is science fit to be taught in public schools;
  • she is a homophobic bigot;
  • she is some who opposes a rape victim's right to lift her finger to attempt to prevent pregnancy, let alone a woman's right to choose to terminate a pregnancy in general;
  • she is some one with no experience at all in national or world issues;
  • she is some one who says an imperialist war predicated on lies is God's task.

I don't give a flying fuck about her sex life or that of her daughter.

113. Speaking bout "flying fucks".
Sarah Louise Heath was very pregnant already when she got married to Todd Palin, ironically. Same as her poor victimized oldest daughter, Bristol.

Sarah Palin's hypocrisy has no rational bounds. Sarah Palin has lived in a fantasy world that has worked very well for her until her indomitable hubris and the "PETER PRINCIPLE" converged this past week.

Between the obvious fascism displayed to the world by the USGestapo in Denver and the Twin Cities coincidently with the transparent, amateurish, incessant, desperate prevaricating from the Rethugs spokesbozos, and their lousy candidates, the world is watching our meltdown into a scary new paradigm.

Tyranny!

Blatant, naked corporate/government conspiracies to enable the continued pleonexia, the boundless greed which is squandering our progenies chance for a prosperous economy and efficient infrastructure.

Even the most sanguine Amerikkkan consumer/producer ant can see the country we knew 30, 40 or 50 years ago has gone the way of the Dodo.

The USA is the newest "banana republic"!

Can you feel the heat yet

I'm sure the Enquirer thinks likewise. What an ass!

She might not wanna kick the press in the face, with all the public scandal about her they're just finding out about.

They'll crucify her. Her speech tonight and her behavior toward certain reporters took all the gloves off. She'll get the full bazookas. And she isn't even smart enough YET to tone it down and generate some sympathy for herself.

What an idiot. She deserves what she gets.

Btw, I have no doubt the affair is true. I think the Enquirer's got the goods on her. Very cool, that they forced her hand into going public on Babygate. Credit where it's due.

Give me a break! Stuff like this sticks in the public's mind, even when it's totally false. Obama is correct to distance himself and his campaign from any of it in every instance, but that doesn't mean rumors and innuendos don't have an effect.

126. McCain campaign calls Palin affair 'vicious lie.'
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 11:45 PM by Indi Guy
Source: Associated Press

6 hours ago

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — John McCain's campaign is denying a tabloid report that vice president candidate Sarah Palin had an extramarital affair. "It's a vicious lie," spokesman Steve Schmidt said.

The campaign is considering legal action, the senior adviser added.

The National Enquirer wrote in its edition dated Sept. 15 that Palin had an affair with a business associate of her husband, Todd Palin. He discovered the infidelity and dissolved the business, the article said. It attributed the allegation only to "an enemy" of the Alaska governor.

"The smearing of the Palin family must end," Schmidt said in a statement released Wednesday. "The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false."

128. Let's be skeptics
Just because the NE nailed it with Edwards, does not mean that all the reports there are true.

129. Just like her connection to the trooper firing was a lie
until it wasn't

that she opposed the Bridge to Nowhere from the beginning...which she wasn't

that she has been a steadfast crusader against corruption in government... which she isn't

130. Can't wait to see what develops. They ALWAYS deny it first, and make
noise about suing.

132. I wonder if this is the 'Rouge Cuo' car-wash business?
That business wasn't paying taxes and it was shut down, IIRC. Wouldn't this be delicious?

133. Let inquiring minds inquire
It's a free country. Palin is welcome to sue if she can't handle the truth.

136. And suddenly there was this tremendous sound of ripping metal...
But the first class passengers didn't worry. After all, the Titanic was unsinkable. John McCain is the Titanic. Sarah Palin is the iceberg he hit.

The NE seems to be right more often than not on this kind of thing. I don;t care who takes her down, so long as someone does.

139. Okay, honest question...
Do you personally care if she is taken out with lies? Does the end justify the means?

Or do you prefer it is the truth that takes her down?

Or do you really not care either way, as long as she is gone?

I'm not asserting the veracity of the story at all. Just thinking out loud.

143. If it's a lie -- then it's only an ugly rumor put forth by a sleazy rag...
I don't want any public figure (of any stripe) brought down by a lie.

This understood, Palin is now on the national/global stage; and she's going to have to weather the storms -- just like all other high profile figures that have to deal with the rumor mill.

Albeit an unseemly process -- it's a test, and a right of passage.

legal action. They'd be taking legal action.

144. Sarah Palin, allegedly having an affair with her husband’s business partner?
I'll be darn. I would say I don't believe it, if they hadn't been right about John Edwards.
