Michigan man planned to bomb GOP convention, Feds say

By Pete Williams, NBC News Justice Correspondent

Federal prosecutors today revealed the arrest of a Michigan man who made at least five Molotov cocktails that he planned to throw at the Republican National Convention. He also discussed plans to bomb underground power cables to shut off power to the convention center, federal officials said.

The man, 23-year-old Matthew DePalma of Flint, was arrested on Saturday in an apartment in South Minneapolis. FBI investigators say they found three completed Molotov cocktails there. And they say he had spent several weeks building explosives and planning a potential attack.

The FBI began investigating DePalma in July, after he attended a convention of anarchists in Wisconsin. (The FBI says it was the Crime Thinc Convergence.) DePalma told an FBI source that he planned to go to "make some bombs and "blow up" the Republican convention. From then on, federal agents had him under surveillance.

He was overheard describing a plan to place a bomb in tunnels near the convention center to cause a power outage. And he was observed at a county library researching bomb recipes. Investigators say he managed to make two containers of a flammable gel, like Napalm. In all, they say he had made five Molotov cocktails.

Due to the law enforcement performance thus far at the Republicon Convention, I'll need something more than the word of the FBI.

8. That was my thought too--the headline is messed up
If I was arrested for everything I "thought" about doing I'd be locked up for the rest of my life.
This guy actually made the bombs--there's a big threshold there.

10. That headline came directly off my teevee screen.
It was in a on-screen window on MSNBC at approximately 3:04pm EDT.

It took another 20 or so minutes before anything appeared on the website.

17. I figured that
I didn't think it was a headline you made up. Some of the headlines they make up to catch attention are crazy and deserve a mention on a late night talk show routine.

2. Gee, I want to do a lot of things to those anti American fuckers
but I lack the means and the opportunity.

Does this mean I'm equally guilty?

This is the sort of garbage that will continue to get worse unless we stop it now.

7. If the RW FBI is not lying, again, this guy needs to go down.
Stupidity such as this kills our message among the people we need to reach.

I'd like to be able to find out how he thinks, and be able to point out where we disagree on how change is done in this country.

BTW: This thread sounded like a RW operative-festival. Sheesh.

11. not to be totally insensitive
but the guy is from Flint...where auto job losses hit hard and the past 8 years have been one long nightmare.

at least this guy knew who the right target was for his frustration...Unlike the last few nutters who thought it was the Dems fault they were unemployed.

I know, this is a horrible thing to say and I don't wish harm on anyone. But I do like to see some accuracy in their anger:-)

16. The talking head said the FBI was 'embedded' with the group.
'FBI embed' = euphemism for 'agent provocateurs' and 'spies.'
