McCain arrives, greets Palin daughter, father-to-be

The Republican candidate landed at about noon and was greeted by his wife, vice presidential running mate Gov. Sarah Palin and members of her family.

By PAUL WALSH and RICHARD MERYHEW, Star Tribune Staff Writers

Last update: September 3, 2008 - 1:18 PM

Sarah Palin, the Republicans' surprise choice for the vice-presidential slot on the presidential ticket, will go before her party's national convention and her fellow Americans tonight and make her first major address since presumptive presidential nominee John McCain chose her for the No. 2 spot.

Meanwhile, McCain flew into the Twin Cities, arriving about noon at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. He was met on the tarmac by among others his wife, Cindy, and Palin and her family.

That included Palin's pregnant teenage daughter, Bristol, and father-to-be Levi Johnston. McCain gave Bristol numerous hugs, patted Johnston on the arm and spoke with the couple longer than any of the others in the greeting line.

edit to add: they're going to milk this for all it's worth. It's now the Holy Madonna and Joseph, instead of two horny irresponsible kids.

18. As others have posted, they look like they
belong on the Springer show. The theme would be, "You knocked up my daughter and are screwing up my political ambitions." It would be the highest rated episode ever. Springer should really consider it.

26. Let them.
The only people that will fall for it are the people who are already voting for them.

If these kids were any color other than white the Repubs would be slamming their parents, their culture and their irresponsibility.

40. DU Idiots
Well, into the muck once more.

The only reasonable post on this thread seems to be #25 who pointed out that the kind of comments found here are exactly what the McCain camp is hoping for. So keep it up with "trailer trash" and "Springer" and anything else that you can do to kiss Pennsylvania, and Ohio, and Indiana goodbye. I can just hear the McCain campaign now - "Stupidity: The gift that keeps on giving!"

Fortunately, I suspect that none of the posters, especially the nastier ones, work for the Obama campaign, because if you did he has already made it clear that he would FIRE your ass for engaging in this kind of display.

That poor bastard has no fucking idea of the mess he got into when he knocked up his high school honey. No more hangin with his buds, no more illegal fishing, no more drinking beer, life as he knows it has pretty much come to an end.

7. He'll find himself married to satisfy the wingnuts.
Then he'll return to Alaksa and quietly get divorced. No 18-year-old who has apparently dropped out of school, posts on his MySpace that he doesn't want kids, and whose life centers around hockey and drinking brew with his buds, is going to put up with this for very long.

The whole thing is an unfortunate charade.

10. Children are a burden to the young
It's best left to those who have established careers and know what they are doing.
But try to tell that you a young-un who's knocked up. None of the parents-to-be in the high school where I used to talk even gave a passing thought to giving their child up for adoption.

11. How close to a mic do you think they'll let that "Alaskan redneck" get? . . .
I'm bettin', if he gets within 20 feet of one, it'll be because they passed his tongue through a red-hot ring and muted his voice for the duration of the convention.

brew. He's hating every minute of it, and he and Bristol have nothing to say to each other. And that poor baby. Being carted around like a sack of groceries and handed off to surrogates.

Why the hell couldn't the campaign leave these kids out of it? Palin has no sense at all.

23. Poor kid
Poor Levi looks like he'd much rather be back up at home playing some Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4 on his Xbox 360 and yelling at people over Xbox Live instead of being forcibly transported to Minneapolis.

I truly feel bad for both Levi and Bristol. They are victims of Sarah Palin's political ambitions. Neither look happy, both look miserable. And for what? So Sarah Palin can keep and/or gain political support? Palin and McCain tell the media to stay out, but then they continue to exploit the children for political points.

Most Americans will fall for this, but those of us with brains capable of thinking beyond soundbites are completely appalled. Those of us who can see this for what it is are appalled that the Republican party - the party of the religious right and family values - hasn't come out chastizing Bristol and Levi for premarital sex but rather embrace them now as a positive portrait of family values.

I SINCERELY hope that while McCain was talking to Levi and Bristol he at least had the decency to apologize for dragging them into this mess.

political ambition get in the way of her common sense, if she has any, which is doubtful. All she had to do when McSame came calling was to say "Thanks, but no, thanks. I have an unmarried pregnant teen, a special needs infant, 2 other children at home, a husband whose job takes him away for long stretches, and all I can handle as a governor. Plus, I'm the target of an ethics investigation. I don't think this is the right time to be taking something like this on."

But, no. She chose to put her ambition in front of everything, and more than likely hid whatever skeletons she could from McSame, who did a piss poor job of vetting her and is now stuck.

It's a damn shame these small town kids, who apparently have no ambition beyond kicking back and enjoying a Bud, are being used this way by Palin, McCain, and the repuke party, all of which should all be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

People you really dont get it do you ... The response that we see to Palin on DU is exactly what the Repukes want... It is going to stir the Evangelicals like not even Hillary could. They will see it as a Jihad for the womens integrity. Democrats that fall into this trap will have no one to blame but themselves... Stay above the fray and stick to your principles... Obama will get the backlash... if you don't.

27. Greatest VP Pick EVER
Thank you McCain for making it interesting. You could have gone with boring Pawlenty or Romney. And it would be the same scripted election as the others...new, exciting, change on the left and consistent, boring, sameness on the right. But this is a gamechanger. Wait, the republicans are young, attractive, and extremists?
