CIA chief to correct 'misperceptions' on Iraq WMD
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N04154620.htm

WASHINGTON, Feb 4 (Reuters) - CIA Director George Tenet plans to try and correct what he considers "misperceptions" about prewar intelligence on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction in his first public appearance since fresh controversy erupted over the issue, an intelligence official said on Wednesday.

In a speech at Georgetown University on Thursday, Tenet will "correct some of the misperceptions and downright inaccuracies concerning what the intelligence community reported and did not report regarding Iraq," the U.S. intelligence official said on condition of anonymity.

"He will point out it is premature to reach conclusions," the official added.

The furor over whether Iraq possessed banned weapons before the U.S.-led war, flared again recently after former chief U.S. weapons inspector David Kay said he believed there were no large stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons in Iraq.

Kay, who was appointed by Tenet...

2. I was hoping this would be the "circling of the wagons"
...but it turns out, part of what Tenet is going to say will support the * administration.

From the AP Story:

"Those who say the search for WMD is 85 percent finished are 100 percent wrong."

Tenet plans to echo what other administration officials and congressional Republicans have been saying -- that it is premature to reach firm conclusions.

Ugh.

4. they don't call it the "company" for nothing. Tenet will limit exposure to
both the CIA and the Admin. Leaves it up to Congress. (Don't hold your breath).

5. He still thinks there are WMD's in Iraq too? They are all delusional
These guys are starting to act like they are worried about being participants in a war crimes tribunal. They are grasping at straws.

7. 'misperceptions'... now that is an understatment
not misinformation. Not misleading/decieveing the public... simply 'intelligence misperceptions'. Unbelievable.

8. glad to see Kerry's all over this! (NOT!)
Since he voted for the war, all he can say is "I was a dupe, too!"

This is a real problem.

11. Oh, let's see what the actual speech says.
The pre-speech leaking may be designed to keep Tenet healthy long enough to make the speech. Oh, and to finalize those travel plans to Belize!

I am tuning up the read-between-the-lines-o-meter.

Tenet to Defend CIA's Role In Prewar Iraq Intelligence
By Walter Pincus and Dana Priest
Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, February 5, 2004; Page A01
CIA Director George J. Tenet plans today to deliver a spirited and highly unusual public defense of his agency's prewar conclusions that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, and to disclose previously secret success the CIA had in uncovering weapons programs in Libya and Pakistan, senior intelligence officials said yesterday.More

Kerry tried to cover his own and W's failures by asking for his head.
Clark said it's W's responsibility!

15. Anyone noticing a pattern here?
Cheney, Rummy, and now Tenet is saying those weapons might be found yet.

Why do I get the feeling something is going to be announced soon?

I am probably way off base, but it was my first impression.

They know something, and are just waiting to let critics hang themselves.

Planted maybe?

I will shut up now.

17. No misconception here, the USA kicked out the UN Inspectors,
.
.

bombed, invaded and slaughtered innocent Iraqis to get THEIR Inspectors in.

Finding nothing, the US pulled their "inspectors" out.

NOW they want the UN to go back in and clean up their mess?

Sorry, the USA Admin. has lost all credibility in MY eyes,

and I suspect in many nations around the world.

If this wasn't an election year, we wouldn't be hearing squat from the WH or it's minions.
