Obama Gains Among Former Clinton Supporters

Obama gains on other dimensions, including terrorism and leadership

by Frank Newport

PRINCETON, NJ -- The Democratic convention appears to have helped solidify support for Barack Obama among former Hillary Clinton supporters, with the percent saying they will vote for Obama in November moving from 70% pre-convention to 81% after the convention, and the percent certain to vote for Obama jumping from 47% to 65%.

Other pre and post comparisons show that Obama gained modestly in his positioning against John McCain on several dimensions, including the perception that he is better able to handle terrorism and the situation in Iraq, and that he is a strong and decisive leader.

15. Clearly the Clinton supporters are loyal Democrats
It's a minority that's jumping.

20. Jumping?
That's debatable. The founders/heads of PUMA are former (possibly undercover) repukes, who donated and voted that way fairly recently.

I agree with the sentiment that voting solely on party lines is stupid. I'll vote independent, Green, maybe just MAYBE libertarian, but I refuse to cross the line and vote for a repugnican.

26. Giving them the benefit of the doubt -- on TDS they did look like Central Casting types
I vote with the strongest party that best approximates my views. The GOP is too dangerous to do otherwise.

29. Exactly, we are loyal Democrats, we supported Hillary, but Obama is our candidate
I can tell you that pretty much everyone in my family supported Hillary from the beginning right up until she stood down as a candidate.

As soon as Obama had become our Presidential candidate, we immediately threw our 100% support behind him.

And I believe it's the same for the majority of Hillary supporters, the turncoats will be a TINY minority I bet.

3. I doubt it was the Dem convention. It was probably more Palin and the Repub convention.
To remind people of what they are voting against. It's one thing to get pissed at Obama and say "I'm voting for McCain, that'll show him." It's another to watch McCain show you what he thinks of you, and then say "That's who I want as president."

Anyone upset at Obama for not choosing Clinton would have been twice as upset at McCain's transparent attempt to steal their vote. "Let's see, they must all be angry women (that's a sexist mistake a lot of DUers make, too), so if I just choose a female running mate, even if she disagrees with Clinton and her supporters on every single issue, they will be more likely to vote for me."

I think at that point any genuine Clinton supporter still considering McCain had to sigh and get over it.

4. Of course. This is to be expected.
Obama won a hard-fought contest fair-and-square with a campaign of honesty and honor. Who wouldn't be drawn to a candidate like that after he secured the nomination?

No surprise, but welcome news.

6. HRC supporters are not stupid
they didn't support HRC simply because she was female. They supported her based on a very long record of achievements, courage and public service. Can you imagine HRC supporters voting for someone who works hard to deny them access to birth control? The GOP have their heads up McLame's @$$ if they thought for one minute they were going to get HRC supporters with Palin. Was the GOP always this weak? Man they are at risk for spiraling out of existence.

8. Exactly, we aren't stupid
And I still support Hillary Clinton, but Senator Obama is my Presidential candidate now.

Like you say, how on earth can ANYONE who supports someone who's pro-Choice and pro-Contraception, suddenly decide to support McCain/Palin who are anti-Choice and anti-Contraception, it makes no sense whatsoever.

It's like the GOP assume that many women will just automatically support McCain now because of Palin, there's no chance of that happening....women aren't going to support a woman who busts her ass to restrict the rights of women.

22. Just another example of
how McC doesn't get it. Seriously? Did he really think HRC would support Palin only on the basis of gender? Although it's shallow, it doesn't sound like a decision someone with years of political experience would make. I am baffled by his decision making. How after all this time could he not understand voters?

27. Considering the McCain camp is whining about the criticism of Palin being "sexist"
Which it isn't of course....they have a nerve of accusing anyone of being sexist, isn't expecting women to vote for Palin simply because she's a woman a pretty sexist thing?

7. I supported Hillary Clinton 100% from the beginning of her campaign
I supported her 100% right up until she ended her campaign.

I'm 100% behind Senator Obama, hands down....I can't see how ANY Hillary Clinton supporter could possibly support McCain....McCain/Palin stand for EVERYTHING thats the opposite of what Hillary Clinton stands for.

10. Many of us erroneously believed Clinton would try to trip Barack Obama
But she turned out to be a great politician who wants what's best for America.

I don't need to apologize, since I never doubted her.

11. A Friend of Mine Refuses to vote for Sen. Obama as President because he thinks:
1. Sen. Obama's Supporters would come out against Sen. Hillary's Supporters by calling her supporters racist if they would not support Sen. Obama.
2. Sen. Obama's Supporters used bully tactics to get their way at most of the Caucuses.
3. Sen. Obama was/is not as qualified as Sen. Clinton. Sen. Obama should have waited.
4. That Sen. Obama's Supporters are still behaving as bullys attempting to beat up those who are in opposition, and that these supporters are using the same methods that we have decried the 'Pukes using.

I do not feel the same way. I know that there were excesses in many of the candidates Rep. Dem. and whatnot. People can suck. Still, if one cares about social justice, progress, health care, the economy, our best hope, at this time, is the Democratic Party. Please Vote _______________, Please Vote?

14. The GOP's plan to get Clintonians just went up in smoke!
Looks like the GOP's plan to grab as many Clintonian voters as they could just took a huge hit.

Before, the M$M was talking about all the Hillary voters being "in play".

Ummm.... guess not. Or at least, not enough to make it worth spending all that effort the GOP has been doing. Neverthless, let them continue to waste time and money on this, as it will only benefit Obama/Biden as they continue to focus on REAL ISSUES facing Americans today.

23. Plan? what plan?
Plan implies thought. There doesn't seem to be any thought going into their decisions in this campaign. I think Obama was right when he said John McC just doesn't get it.
