Stock exchange ahead for Central America

It may start in the first half of next year

An integrated Central American stock exchange, intended to increase trading volume and lure foreign investors and companies, may start in the first half of next year, the chairman of Panama's stock exchange said last week.

Regulatory and technical obstacles probably will be resolved in the coming months, clearing the way for a single trading platform for Panama, Costa Rica and El Salvador, Ricardo Arango said during a conference in Panama City.

The three Central American markets have been taking advice from Scandinavia's integrated exchange, in a project funded by the Inter-American Development Bank.

Chile, Mexico and Brazil are also discussing removing barriers to cross-border trading, while Colombia and Peru may create a trading platform next year.
