The Nebraska Attorney General's Office today voided the pending Sept. 1 layoffs of seven workers in the Otoe County Roads Department.
The attorney general said the county board had held an illegal public meeting when it made the layoff decision.
The pending layoffs for seven of the county roads department's 25 employees have caused an emotional stir across Otoe County, population 14,250. Four men work as rock-truck drivers and three are bridge crew employees.
On Aug. 12, the county board's meeting agenda gave no notice that it planned to discuss or take action on employee layoffs. Instead, the agenda simply listed "budgetary matters" as one of the items to be discussed.
