CLEVELAND -- In the newest survey by the U.S. Census Bureau, Cleveland ranks No. 2 among American cities with the highest rate of poverty.

The poverty rate for Cleveland was 29.5 percent in 2007. Detroit had the highest rate of poverty and Buffalo came in third. All three top spots go to major cities in the Lake Erie area.

Overall, 37.3 million Americans were living in poverty in 2007. The median income is just over $50,000.

2. Damn! I was just in Cleveland in June. My first time there...
I attended a conference and came away with the impression that Cleveland was a pretty nice place. I guess I didn't see all of it...

4. I'm from Cleveland...
Actually the burbs, but still. It IS nice here, but there's a lot of poverty in & around the area. Same reason on Pittsburgh - manufacturing. I grew up in a town just like Flint, MI - Lorain, OH & I want to cry anytime I see Roger & Me.

5. Pittsburgh has its trouble spots.
But I don't think it's quite as widespread as Cleveland.

9. I grew up in the area too. Damn shame.
Last time I was back was in 2004. Stayed right downtown but got out to the east and south suburbs. It looked pretty raw then.

3. Cleveland has been either No. 1 or 2 on that list for several years, sigh.
The main industry here now is medical. Oh, and service of course. :eyes:

It would be wonderful if the alternative energy industry could take root here. I'm keeping that thought anyway because I don't see much else that could bring life back to the forgotten cities on Lake Erie. :(

11. The main industry may be "medical", but
just go a few blocks away from the Cleveland Clinic or University Hospitals, and you'll be surrounded by bleak neighborhoods whose residents will likely never be able to access the services of either of those esteemed icons of medicine. The Cleveland Clinic is especially disgusting with that, their "nonprofit" status be damned. They treat you like dirt if you don't have insurance or enough money or the "right" insurance. They're now really only interested in catering to bigwig muckymucks or foreign rich dudes.

I grew up in an eastern Cleveland suburb; lived there most of my life until a few years ago when I moved to SD. I live on a reservation, and believe me, as poverty-stricken as it is, as all reservations in this state are, there are parts of Cleveland that are much, much worse. Terribly sad, really. And I don't ever see it getting any better. No wonder so many collection agencies and vulture collectrolls have their headquarters there.
