US Soldier Killed by Bomb South of Baghdad
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=578&ncid=578&e=7&u=/nm/20040203/ts_nm/iraq_death_dc

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A U.S. soldier was killed and another wounded by a roadside bomb south of Baghdad Tuesday, the U.S. military said.

A U.S. statement said the soldier was killed at about 10.30 a.m. close to Iskandariya, about 30 miles south of the capital.

The death brings to 367 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in combat in Iraq (news - web sites) since the start of the U.S.-led war on Iraq

>>> notice the number parsing.... It is 523 Dead as of today!

:(

1. National Review whines about death statistics.
The neo-cons at National Review are complaining that the media are giving numbers on soldiers' deaths without "framing" the issue by listing a litany of types of accidental deaths that occur everyday. The difference is that a man ordered these men to their deaths. This is no accident. And when this happens, there better be a good reason. We have the right to demand that.

2. And a thing about the number parsing!
When we talk about the Vietnam war dead, we aren't just including KIA.Why are the media playing along with this numbers-reduction game in this conflict. They need to be set straight. They need to at a minimum reference both numbers.

7. Good point. How do we make them honest?
Obviously relying on their good journalistic ethics isn't working.

3. 326 plus two missing
since I don't remember when so it should be safe to say that the death toll stands at 328. It doesn't matter if a soldier is killed by an ied, whether they were killed in a vehical accident, or if they took their own life, dead is dead, wounded and maimed is wounded and maimed, and the fact of the matter is all of the dead and wounded were caused by lies.

13. And "Bring it On", the Resistance did
Another death for big oil. I wonder if Halliburton (2LLs) would send $100.00 cash ( A Benjamin), as kind of a Valentine gratuity to the family ?? On second thought Nah

5. Despicable
There are all kinds of ways for the media to lowball the casualty numbers, and you can expect more of it as the numbers grow.

8. Well over 625
If you include the "coalition of the willing". Add in many hundreds of Iraqi post-invasion 'police' and you have no trouble topping 1000. Without even considering innocent civilians, which would put the total in the tens of thousands. And they all died for a lie.
