(Bob) Woodward exposes Bush "secrets"
Source: AP

NEW YORK — The name of Bob Woodward's fourth investigative work on the Bush administration has finally been revealed, just three weeks before the book's release.

"The War Within: A Secret White House History 2006-2008" will be published Sept. 8 by Simon & Schuster with an announced first printing of 900,000 copies.

"There has not been such an authoritative and intimate account of presidential decision-making since the Nixon tapes and the Pentagon Papers," Woodward's longtime editor, Alice Mayhew, said Tuesday. "This is the declassification of what went on in secret, behind the scenes."

1. Just in time to be years too late
Thanks, Bob. Your "service" to the larger issues of Truth and Freedom will not soon be forgotten.

4. How so? Woodward has been on top of this administration for years.
These things take time.

7. And there's money to be made in writing books
Certainly more money and more teevee time talking at length about one's Very Serious Book than there is in reporting in real time when things are happening. Woodward has, for the past 20 years, been about the Very Serious Business of Advancing Bob Woodward. How might the course of the last five years have gone differently if Bob Woodward had "been on top" of these stories rather than saving them up for a fat advance from Simon & Schuster? Instead, he continues to collect his Washington Post paycheck while hoarding the more salient and pertinent stories for his book. Might "the surge" have been avoided? Might we have seen a significant reduction in troop levels in Afghanistan and Iraq had Woodward been writing these reports instead of squirreling them away? How many civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan have died since 2006? How many military? How many of these deaths might not have happened if Woodward had been more concerned with getting this story out when it was going on? Nobody can say for sure, but I'm willing to bet there are quite a number.

And now Bob Woodward gets to go on Larry King and Wolf Blitzer and Charlie Rose (he'll probably avoid Bill Moyers like the plague) so he can be assured by the media luminaries that he's great and wonderful and insightful. Too bad for the dead whose deaths might have been avoided, but Mr. Woodward needed to supplement his income and go on a book tour. But now we'll have some confirmation of things that we know for a fact have been going on for the last several years, so we have that going for us, I suppose.

Books do indeed take time; but reporting, Mr. Woodward's day job, is supposed to bring news to the public at a time when it can do some good. And by that standard, he's a failure. A rich failure, but a failure nonetheless.

9. Right on, I've been saying this for years. I'm not reading any more of his crap. Day late, dollar
short. The US could have used some of his reporting, but he saved it all up for his book.

26. Don't forget the book gets the 60 Minutes and WP Roll Out
The Washington Post, where Woodward currently serves as an associate editor, will run excerpts on Sept. 7. That night, Woodward will be interviewed on CBS television's "60 Minutes." (Both CBS and Simon & Schuster are owned by Viacom, Inc.)

Yep, good old Bob makes a ton of money from a book with info he knew that could've gotten Bush and Cheney impeached and perhaps others in this misadministation charged or fired.

Too damn late! Still I will read the book - damn Woodward.

29. I like the idea of reading it while the news is hot
Besides I'll resell it on Amazon - that way Woodward doesn't make a profit from my selling of his book.

and the illegal invasion of Iraq in his first book on Bush. Now he tries to remove the taint that will never wash out.

He's never broken a story that wasn't fed to him, by sources with agendas.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was a Mockingbird.

19. Woodward is a bit complicit.
Don't get me wrong. Information is information, but you need a filter for information that comes from a journalist who has inside NSA and Navy conflicts of interest... He's not the most independent of sources.

17. At this point, Bush is invincible
Edited on Tue Aug-19-08 12:38 PM by Kelvin Mace
Nancy "Show me a crime" Pelosi has said he will not be impeached. Woodward could have video of Bush beating a puppy to death with a kitten and Cheney skull-fucking the corpses of children, but Nancy (and the corporate media) would see nothing wrong. In fact, Bush would be praised for adopting strays, and Cheney would be praised for his concern for children.

Forget it. You lost whatever credibility you had when you put out the starry-eyed man-crush "Bush at War". Nixon laughs at you from the grave for the suck up you have become.

27. More Bush Stenography?
Edited on Tue Aug-19-08 04:06 PM by RamboLiberal
-----

Woodward has had remarkable cooperation from all levels of the Bush administration, with National Security Adviser Stephen J. Hadley encouraging top officials to participate.

Administration officials tell Politico that Woodward spent two mornings with President Bush and interviewed Vice President Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and a host of other senior officials.

Woodward has regularly visited the White House, State Department, Pentagon, various intelligence agencies and the private homes of generals and other officials, high and low.

-----

White House officials say they are optimistic that the book, which the publisher says “declassifies the secrets of America's political and military involvement in Iraq,” will reflect more favorably on Bush than Woodward’s previous volume, “State of Denial,” which came out in September 2006.

The president’s surge strategy for Iraq, albeit late, has slowed the violence on the ground, and Bush aides believe the book will reflect that.
