Phelps Ties Spitz Record With 7th Gold

BEIJING — Michael Phelps has caught Mark Spitz, 36 years after his record haul of seven gold medals at the Munich Games. Now it may take only a day for Spitz to be left behind.

Phelps won the 100-meter butterfly Saturday morning here, coming from behind to out-touch Milorad Cavic of Serbia by one-hundredth of a second and claim his seventh gold medal of the Beijing Games. Cavic led almost the entire race, but as Cavic glided in to the wall, Phelps took another stroke to grab the victory with a time of 50.58 seconds.

Phelps will swim the third leg — the butterfly leg — of the 4x100 medley relay on Sunday morning with a chance to set himself apart in Olympic history with eight golds. . . .

Reminds me of 1980, and the Miracle on Ice. Nobody had VCRs, of course, and there was no cable worth speaking of. So everyone waited for ABC to telecast the game. Except, on the Detroit ABC affiliate, the anchor (Bill Bonds, aka The Sun King - don't ask) came on during a commercial to announce the result before the game was over.

Holy Hell erupted. Seriously. I will never forget it.

RichRod seems a little glitzy for U-M. He's got a lot of work to do. I think another mid-major coach rather than The Big Name might have been the way to go for Michigan.

24. Bob Costas interviewed both Spitz and Phelps together over satellite..

around midnight EST, I think. Spitz was very gracious and seemed genuinely happy for him. He made a point of saying that swimmers from other countries were in many cases vastly improved today compared to the competition he faced, making Phelps's accomplishments even greater. He even laughed quite a bit when Costas remarked that Spitz wore a swimsuit from the local sporting goods store, not one designed by NASA.
