Study Cautions Against Strike on Iran's Nuclear Facilities
Source: Washington Post

A military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities would probably only delay the country's progress toward nuclear-weapons capability, according to a study that concludes that such an attack could backfire by strengthening Tehran's resolve to acquire the bomb.

The analysis by the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security found that Iran's uranium facilities are too widely dispersed and protected -- and, in some cases, concealed too well -- to be effectively destroyed by warplanes. And any damage to the country's nuclear program could be quickly repaired.

"Following an attack, Iran could quickly rebuild its centrifuge program in small, easily hidden facilities focused on making weapon-grade uranium for nuclear weapons," said principal author David Albright, ISIS president and a former U.N. weapons inspector.

The study, scheduled for release today, is based in part on a comparison of Iran's known nuclear facilities with Iraq's Osirak reactor, which Israeli jets destroyed in a 1981 strike intended to curb Baghdad's nuclear ambitions. Although Israel struck a devastating blow against Iraq's program, a strike against Iran would be harder by several orders of magnitude, according to Albright and co-authors Paul Brannan and Jacqueline Shire.

Massive US Naval Armada Heads For Iran

<snip>
The build up of naval forces in the Gulf will be one of the largest multi-national naval armadas since the First and Second Gulf Wars. The intent is to create a US/EU naval blockade (which is an Act of War under international law) around Iran (with supporting air and land elements) to prevent the shipment of benzene and certain other refined oil products headed to Iranian ports. Iran has limited domestic oil refining capacity and imports 40% of its benzene. Cutting off benzene and other key products would cripple the Iranian economy. The neo-cons are counting on such a blockade launching a war with Iran.

2. Why would you want to commit genocide?
Iran isn't a nuclear threat now, and won't be a nuclear threat for years to come, if ever. The best possible evidence shows that they are enriching uranium for fuel purposes, not military purposes. Why "glass the entire country" for no good reason? Are you really that bloodthirsty, or is this some sort of sick sarcasm that doesn't come across well on the internet?

3. When did any official warnings ever stop the Bush Administration from carrying out their agenda?

The mission statement of the Bush Administration is:

"My mind is made up. Don't confuse me with the facts."

4. It seems like...
showing Bush/Cheney that their idea is stupid just makes them determined to prove you wrong. So far they have a perfect record of failing to do so. There's no telling what these assholes will try to do in the last days of power (assuming they consider these the last days of their power), but I bet they'd LOVE to walk away leaving a nice fresh war to hand of to the next administration. McInsane would be happy to keep it going and it would make Obama's presidency just that much more difficult. Not to mention that if they start a bullshit war with Iran or now Syria, and Obama immediately turns tail and pulls out, in 2012 twelve they'll use that for the theme of their campaign. I'd sure like to know what's going through Cheney's sick mind right now (I figure the Saturday morning cartoons have * pretty much occupied right now).
