Same-Sex Marriage Opposition Declining In US
http://www.365gay.com/NewsContent/072503weddingPoll.htm

For the second time in a month, a national survey shows opposition to gay marriage is declining.

While a majority of Americans continue to say they do not think gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry, their ranks are declining, especially among younger people.

The most recent poll, taken by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, shows that 50 percent are opposed to same-sex marriages while 38 percent would support the idea. The findings are a marked improvement from a 1996 Pew survey showing 65 percent said they opposed gay marriages with 27 percent accepting them.

1. Keep Hammering...
As long as folks keep hammering home the message that being gay is not an immoral choice, but a biological imperative worthy of respect, those numbers will continue to look better and better.

Love is all you need, after all...

2. time is on our side

If support is higher among the younger people, change will be inevitable.

In Canada, we had similar patterns for capital punishment -- a similar proportion were in favour of the death penalty when it was abolished by a Parliamentary vote in the mid-1970s. By the turn of the century, the split was even, with a majority opposed to capital punishment projected by the end of the decade, just due to the demographic shift.

3. It is my hope...
That my best friend and her girlfriend will be able to have a legally recognized marriage someday, as of right now I'm helping them jump through hoops just to get rights of attorney (sp?) for each other, and organize a wedding at the same time, as well as getting a Civil Union License in Vermont, good thing the wedding is not till next year, though I doubt that things will change much in the US in that time. Plus I'm best man, so the pressure is on.
