A member of the Saudi religious police has been accused of having six wives at the same time - two more than allowed under religious laws, reports say.

The 56-year-old was detained in south-western Jizan province, according to the Saudi newspaper al-Watan.

Three of the women involved were Saudis and the other three were from Yemen, just over the border, it reported.

The accused denies the women are all currently his wives and says he has divorced two of them.

as long as he could care for them equally, there was no limit.

I know more than a few that marry women in other countries and they stay in those countries, well supported. They can have their children up until they are 5 yo old. At that time if hubby wants-they can go to SA.

I was approached once with a marriage proposal from a very well to do CEO of a Saudi company (through an intermediary). I was asked to submit 2 photos, one face shot and one with a veil. After reading all the terms-esp when I would travel to SA...I got cold feet. I was assured that he was a nice man, and I am sure he was. But I would rather be a poor man's first wife than a rich man's second wife. It was an interesting experience.

O mankind! reverence your Guardian-Lord, who created you from a single person, created, of like nature, His mate, and from them twain scattered (like seeds) countless men and women;- reverence Allah, through whom ye demand your mutual (rights), and (reverence) the wombs (That bore you): for Allah ever watches over you.

2. To orphans restore their property (When they reach their age), nor substitute (your) worthless things for (their) good ones; and devour not their substance (by mixing it up) with your own. For this is indeed a great sin.

3. If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.

My understanding is that all seven schools of Islamic jurisprudence interpret this as meaning that a male Muslim may have up to four wives and no more, and only provided that he is able to provide for them and treat them equally with respect. I remember from a comparative religions class in college (mumble) years ago that some of these schools interpret the passage in a more holistic context and hold that, after one wife, a man can marry only husbandless mothers in need of male protection.

Keep in mind that the state religion of Saudi Arabia is Wahhabism, which many Muslims consider to be heterodox if not heretical. Although based on Sunni schools of theology, Wahhabism rejects the five schools of Sunni fiqh which are an integral part of Sunni Shari'a and instead holds to a fundamentalist, almost sola scriptura view of the Quran. I believe that Wahhabism allows a man to marry as many times as he can afford and has no problem with men having concubines (in the passage quoted above, the "captive that your right hands poessess", ie a slave or bound servant), which both Sunni and Shi'a schools either frown upon or actually prohibit.

This was a SA gentleman, and most of of my sources for info was SA. Since I haven't read the Koran throughly, I was going on the info provided to me. Thanks for the info. At the time, I was a single mom and I was uncomfortable with someone NOT my daughter's dad having a say (even if her dad was a jerk). They assured me that my daughter would be mine, but I just wasn't sold on the idea.

We joke about it. Four years ago, we had a stop over in Dubai. My surly teen daughter started giving me grief. I told her to watch her step-I could get 2 horses, 6 camels, and a herd of goats for her (she was blonde and 13). Dubai was a wonderful place by the way...the Moslem Rivera. They are fairly lose there, so this almost smacks of a set up.

My daughter still has a copy of her censored Cosmo (British edition) that we picked up. They used a special black marker and it was done by hand. :spray:

My understanding is that once the limit of four was reached, all the "extras" were never wives. As such, they were "impure" women engaged in prostitution. If the law doesn't kill them, it is very likely that their "disgraced" families will.

A SAUDI judge who served as head of an Islamic court has reportedly been arrested in the Gulf emirate of Dubai on charges of possessing and using drugs.

Hamad Salim bin Naif, who served as head of a sharia court in Saudi Arabia, was arrested along with his Moroccan wife after police raided their room in a Dubai hotel on Friday and found four grams of hashish in his possession, the Khaleej Times reported.
