Internet worm shuts down software website
Last Updated Sun, 01 Feb 2004 13:39:21

LONDON - The MyDoom internet worm paralysed the website of a U.S.-based software company Sunday, one of two expected targets of denial-of-service attacks.

Utah-based SCO Group confirmed its site had been shut down because of a massive data blitz.

"Internet traffic began building momentum on Saturday evening and by midnight EST the SCO site was flooded with requests beyond its capacity," the company said in a statement.

6. No, they sell Unix (TM)
They are currently trying to kill off Linux through ridiculous litigation, because it is the same thing as the Unix they sell, only free and available to the public.

4. This is cyber-terrorism and it should be condemned...
...despite how one feels about SCO Group (I'm no fan of SCO).

I'm hoping they prosecute those responsible (also hoping that we find those responsible for the DOS attack on DU, too!!!)

8. Please don't equate vandalism with "terrorism"
That's where Ashcroft wants us to go: property damage equivalent to violence against people.

5. btw - SCO is suing IBM over linux
SCO has been going under, and their new fiscal plan is to sue people who make and use Linux. They claim that their copyrighted code to sysV unix (it's not clear that they actually own it) was leaked into the linux kernel. instead of showing what part infringes like the linux people want (IF there is infringment, they want to replace the offending code with legal code), they're just suing. driving up the stock price.

at this point there's no indication that linux people have anything to do with the worm tho. The running theory is the MyDoom is the product of spammers/organized crime.

7. IBM and the rest of the world
Remember that they are now demanding money from everyone who uses Linux. Good thing nobody running Linux is paying any attention to their demands.

9. SCO, Linux, Open Source and Cyber Terrorism
For those who don't know: SCO is sueing everyone and his brother for violation of copyright they claim to have on parts of Linux (a widely used Open Source Operating System), for which they have as of yet failed to deliver a single shred of evidence.

SCO already has been lobying government against Open Source, citing it as a "threat to national security".

Next thing you know, Lunix = Terrorism.
