1. God, the media pisses me off
This is a SERIOUS problem that America is facing, and it will get relatively little mention, while all day long the talking heads babble about michael jackson, scott peterson, and kobe bryant.

(Not that there's anything wrong with the Super Bowl, but do we need to natter on and on about it for an entire week, while our troops are dying?)

6. Shit. This is a direct attack on an army installation.
1 killed, 12 others "injured". They would appear to be "wounded" to me. Perhaps quite grievously.

11. That's ok
When searching news.google I thought I saw them using the word "injured" too, and that's what I was commenting on. Now I go back and I see they indeed are using the word "wounded".

7. Leap Year in Iraq
By the end of this month, there will be 35-40 (and maybe more) American soldiers - young men and women in their prime of life, healthy, with families, friends and colleagues, full of love and laughter - who will be dead. Dead. Because of this war. Almost a guarantee at this point. These will be the February dead - the first February dead, and one can only hope the only February dead.

Think of them now, nervously fingering a trigger, or relaxing on a berm, or playing soccer with some kids, or reading a magazine. See them sitting in their cots, or scanning the deadly horizon, or writing a letter. They will be dead before the end of the month. LOOK INTO THEIR FACES. That's a sad vision, indeed.

The motherfucker hasn't scarfed them up yet, so their eyes still light up the desert, their boots still mark the city streets with a history of movement. But the motherfucker has its days and nights, its hours and its averages. The motherfucker says one thing:

TIME IS ON MY SIDE.

18. amen
i "tolerated" the attacks for a while as almost every war has its post-war insurgency, but there seems to be no end in sight. i don't think we should "cut and run" like a lot of DU'ers seem to think, but out current strategy certainly doesn't seem to be working too well I'll admit.

27. We have no business there. We are trying to steal their
resources and invaded their country on a pretext.

"Cutting and running" is what we will have to end up doing, as in Vietnam. The fact that the Iraqis don't want us there seems to make no difference to some americans who think they know what is best for someone else's country. This puzzles me.

Sooner the better.

15. George W. Bush
should wipe that pathetic smirk off his face and take his bogus Rambo act back to Crawford. How many more have to die before Americans decide to throw this criminal out of office?

It`s easy for Bush to puff out his chest and saunter across a stage because he has never had his life on the line. He doesn`t have a six-month old son he`s never seen nor has he watched one of his limbs get blown off and land across the road.

This is a chickenhawk war. They`re all safe. Our soldiers aren`t.

17. January was a bad
month for our troops. Thing is it is hardly being reported. I'm signed up for the 'Breaking news' email alerts on CNN and there aren't even alerts sent anymore. I get them for all the dumb stuff though. I just don't understand how people measure values and conclude that the Repukes have any. I feel very pessimistic sometimes in light of this.

20. i wonder how many troops in iraq right now
were involved in the "overseas military ballot" fraud that put mr. bush over the top in florida.

In an extensive report published July 15, the New York Times shed new light on the methods employed by the Bush campaign to hijack the 2000 presidential election. The report, entitled “How Bush Took Florida: Mining the Overseas Absentee Vote,” was the product of a six-month investigation by the Times into Florida officials’ handling of ballots mailed from outside the US. These overseas votes became a focal point in the struggle between Bush and Democratic candidate Al Gore over the disputed Florida election.

. . . .

But the facts presented by the Times’ account contradict these conclusions. For example, the article noted that 17 percent of military overseas ballots from Florida voters arrived without postmarks, despite military regulations that require all mail to be postmarked. This extraordinary rate of unmarked mail stood in sharp contrast to the rest of the country, where less than 1 percent of all overseas military mail arrived without a postmark during the election period.

The Times reported that Pentagon officials it interviewed “could not fully explain why so many ballots were arriving without postmarks.” One obvious explanation, however, is that there was a concerted effort to solicit late votes from military personnel and ship them without postmarks so as to conceal the fact that they were illegal.

Current plans have overseas military voting through the internet.

I'm quite sure they understand, but will their real votes be counted?

21. God this sounds horrible...... from Aljazeera
<One 4th Infantry Division soldier was killed and 12 were wounded during a rocket attack," on the military base near Balad, 75 kilometres (45 miles) north of the capital, a spokesman said.

Seven rockets were fired on the base at around 1:15 pm (10:15 GMT), another military spokesman said in Baghdad, leaving two of the wounded in a serious condition.

Helicopters returned fire and US forces arrested 12 men and four women following the attack.

An unexploded rocket was later found by US soldiers searching the area of the attack. They erected checkpoints as a security precaution.

The latest death pushes to 251 the number of US soldiers killed in the 10-month insurgency battering Iraq since US President George Bush declared an end to major combat on May 1 2003.>

Edited on Sun Feb-01-04 02:29 PM by DoYouEverWonder
He snuck into Iraq today. Seems there are a lot of casualties whenever he shows up.

Edit: Last time Wolfie went to Iraq he visited Tikrit. I wonder if they were just rolling out the welcome mat for his return?

The occupation forces' bases are glorified tombs.. and they want to maintain a larger set of such on a permanent basis? Sure, just give anybody with a mortar/katyusha/RPG a fixed and permanent set of targets to practice on for months and months..
