Bush to Stay Out of California Recall Fight
WASHINGTON (Reuters)

President Bush's spokesman said on Friday Bush would not get involved in California's political fight, as his fellow Republicans seek to recall Democratic Gov. Gray Davis. ---

"This is a matter that is still up to the people of California and not something we're involved in," said White House spokesman Scott McClellan.

McClellan's statement suggested Bush would not campaign to unseat Davis.

The politics for Bush are tricky. On the one hand he would love to see a Republican in charge of the state with the most electoral votes going into his re-election campaign in 2004.

But on the other hand, overt support for the recall could backfire and hurt his chances in a state that has gone Democratic the past three presidential elections.

4. It isn't going to happen in California.
Everyone in California besides the 2% who wish to recall Davis, the majority of which come from Orange County and the Inland Empire (Also know as land of cow shit), know that Bush is the reason for the "energy shortage." However if Gray Davis doesn't get his act together and ummm act then Arnold may become Goobenor. That would be a sad day.

2. And he probably wants some distance when the origins of CA's problems
are debated. After all, wasn't Enron largely responsible for the phony energy crisis?

24. How come so few journalists mention the car thief?
Interesting, AndyTiedye! Issa was away from the scene of the crime? Just like the Moron was in Crawford for all of August, 2001, cutting shrubs and so on.

Here are some more dots the free press should connect:

• Nixon was a crook.
• Bush is a crook.
• Reagan is a crook.
• Bush 2 is a crook.
• Issa is a crook.

Crooks belong in jail. That's an A #1 fact.

17. Rove's 'dark players' will pay off the shameless Issa ...
for his services, maybe Davis too, for his unflinching willingness to self-immolate. Whatever comes of this loony theatre of the bureaucratic and the criminal, it's a bargain to Enron et al. Arbitrary in a way, too, since most any pseudo-event might've done the task -- could easily have been a sex crime, a kitten rescured, cheating at cards... Any would've covered the stench of ripening body bags just as well, blended just as nicely into the moronic inferno's incessant 'whacky left coast!' giggle-mantra.

"Getting the Blues" by Peter Schrag July 17, 2003/ While California was not alone, it was certainly the biggest target, as the only large state with a Democratic governor, Democratic legislature and a Congressional delegation dominated (32-to-20) by Democrats. "They view California," said a Washington lobbyist, "as a foreign land." ...

23. People's Republic of California
Several business people, at different meetings, have uttered that phrase in my presence. They, of course, don't know my politics. As a Democrat I believe all perspectives should be discussed, even those contrary to mine. If they knew I believed in democracy, cowards from the right would just save their animus until I left the room. I do blame California for one thing — electing the KKK-Mafia-corporate stooge Pruneface Reagan their governor so long ago.

5. Bushler wants to tippy-toe around this issue
'Cause if he supported it, some rebellious Congressmen might make it become a national law and we could recall Bushler!!!

Wouldn't that be a kick in the pants!

16. So will The California Supreme Court
http://www.kron.com/Global/story.asp?S=1375890&nav=5D7iH6pA

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The California Supreme Court declined Friday to halt the recall vote of Gov. Gray Davis.

The move came two days after the state's top election official announced that opponents had gathered enough signatures to call a special election, and a day after Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante set the Oct. 7 election date.

The high court's action, for the moment at least, leaves the recall date intact despite allegations that signatures on recall petitions were improperly gathered. Still, the allegations will be heard in a Los Angeles court Aug. 8 and the outcome could come back to the state Supreme Court.

The Republican-dominated court was responding to an emergency petition by pro-Davis forces. They charged that the 900,000 signatures of registered voters required to force an election were obtained fraudulently.

The court did not rule on the merits of the charges. Instead, the court declined to intervene in what is expected to be fierce litigation in Los Angeles.

The Taxpayers Against the Governor's Recall group, in their petition to the justices, alleged that many of the thousands of paid signature gatherers -- receiving up to $1 for every signature of a registered voter they gathered -- were themselves not registered voters or California residents.

State law, amended in 2001, demands that signature gatherers for recall elections be registered voters and California residents.

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista, bankrolled the recall drive with $1.7 million of his own money and has declared his intention to put his name on the ballot. Issa and other Republican forces have been highly critical of Davis as being responsible for steering California into a $38 billion deficit.

Friday's legal action, for now, leaves unscathed the first recall election against a sitting California governor. Two days earlier, Secretary of State Kevin Shelley announced that Davis opponents had gathered enough signatures of registered voters to force an election.

The case is Robins v. Shelley, S117661.

19. Recall only hurts Bush
If the recall vote fails, the Repubs look like whining losers.

If the recall vote wins, they inherit a screwed up budget and economy, and a legislature firmly against them, and they will look hapless next year.

20. Liar. Bush is very much involved in this.
He's wringing his hands gleefully as he dreams of oil platforms off Santa Barbar's coast and all those Sequoias tumbling down in our national forests. Yesterday, a person called us up and asked if we were doing a story on Bill Simon (Legree) in Rohnert Park for the Man of the Year award. I acted like I didn't hear him and said "loser of the year award!?". He got a little miffed of course. What a bunch of sore losers they all are.
