Palmetto State vote important, but 2nd place might not sting

Kerry

COLUMBIA - U.S. Sen. John Edwards has the deep-rooted political organization, months of on-the-ground campaigning and that authentic Carolinas twang.

Yet two days before the S.C. primary, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry has built momentum in a state he's all but ignored since kicking off his campaign here last fall.

Plus, he's got one advantage over Edwards: Thanks to decisive wins in Iowa and New Hampshire, Kerry merely needs a respectable showing in the Palmetto State, not a win.

A Reuters/MSNBC/Zogby poll released Saturday showed that Edwards was leading Kerry 26 percent to 22 percent. A CBS News poll showed Edwards with a seven-point lead, down from 12 percentage points the day before.

Those stats represent both good and bad news for Kerry.
