COLUMBIA - It's still a two-man race, but Sen. John Edwards appeared confident enough of an S.C. victory on Tuesday that he campaigned elsewhere Saturday.
He had reason to feel bullish about a primary he has called a must-win: New polls showed his lead in South Carolina widening. And Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry -- the Democratic front-runner nationally, but the runner-up in S.C. polls -- had no plans to return before Tuesday.
Still, Edwards returned to Columbia late Saturday after stops in New Mexico, Oklahoma and Missouri, and he plans to campaign across South Carolina -- his native state -- today and Monday. Saturday, hundreds of volunteers fanned out across the state trying to sway undecided voters and scratching for last-minute support.
"We had a great deal more volunteers turning out than we ever anticipated," said John Moylan, Edwards' state chairman. "Clearly we have the energy, enthusiasm and commitment no other candidate can touch."
