Pickens rips Yahoo management, sells entire stake
Edited on Tue Jul-29-08 01:44 PM by Autonomy
Source: AP

SAN FRANCISCO - Billionaire investor T. Boone Pickens has sold all of his holdings in Yahoo Inc. in a pique over the way the Internet company's management handled sales talks with Microsoft Corp.

Pickens told the San Francisco Chronicle that he sold all 10 million of his Yahoo shares at a loss, because he grew frustrated with the company's repeated rebuffs of Microsoft's advances.

"I think that Yahoo management was pathetic," Pickens told the Chronicle in a story published Tuesday.

Pickens declined to quantify his losses, but he acquired his stake in mid-May when Yahoo was trading between $24 and $28 per share.

I hate agreeing with Pickens, but Yang messed up. Someone is going to get this company at a discount.

1. Yahoo stock will be worthless
If Anna Patterson is successful with Cuil, a new search engine project.

Anna is the one who created Google's search engine.

6. cuil's not that bad.
It's helped me find a few things that I couldn't find with google. It's nice to have non-wikipedia results come up early, too.

12. Cuil is only a joke
If you like your search results to be top heavy with Wiki crap and superficial sites.

I've get much better results with Cuil when doing research than Google.

14. I Had The Exact Opposite Experience - Cuil IS a Joke
I put in my place of business; we came up as the first entry, and the next two pages were all Wiki-grabber sites that republished our Wiki entry as their own, with ads. On Google, we come up tops, the REAL Wiki entry comes up next, and from there the next several pages are directly relevant to our business and/or website content.

16. I'm going with this analysis
I tried side my side searches for a day or so with Google and Cuil. I found that Cuil failed utterly in bringing up what I needed where Google usually had it on the first page. Search "DU" on Google and it is the second entry. No where to be found on Cuil.

As for "research" if you are talking real college level research I would not be using either one.

18. Research
It may very well be good for research - just more for people who are looking for it ready-made, you know what I mean?

I'll send you a PM.

4. I don't think Cuil is going to be that big of a player
Unfortunately, while it is early, it doesn't pull very good results yet and I'm not sure the magazine layout will be what everyone wants because it still limits the links on the page and forces people to continually click through pages to get to fewer link options.

I see it going the way of AltaVista or something like that... where it's available but for most people, irrelevant.

Google will continue to stand atop the Search Engine mountain barring something significant changing.

7. So T.Boone Pickemclean Was Hoping to Profit from an MS Buyout But There Wasn't One
I think we can come up with at least a tiny violin quartet in sympathy

8. Yeah I hear ya there
He only bought in May, so yeah he was looking for a quick payoff, but still, he sold at a loss... that's an indication of a possible further drop in Yahoo stock prices. I really don't care if T. Boone Jerkoff loses money. But the status of a tech company like Yahoo is of great interest to me (no, i am not a shareholder).

9. I like the fact he lost money, might serve as example for him and others
Not being assist in giving MS a leg-up probably helps too :-)

Diversification of the the wired world will keep it free from takeovers from people who would only want to harvest it for their own greed

10. He took it at a loss, which is more like losing faith in a company's ability to
generate profits, which is a legitimate concern for any investor. I think he made a good call here. He's not saying "poor me", he's telling Yahoo they their management sucks and he's taking his money elsewhere.

15. It SHOULD Be a Concern to Investors
There is no divine right to profit. In 99% of instances when you buy stock, you are not investing in a company so much as you are propping up someone else's previous investment - or more specifically, someone else's gamble in the company's profitability.
