Georgia cuts all ties to Matrix database
Perdue had to issue second order to act

Gov. Sonny Perdue ordered the GBI on Friday to sever all ties with the controversial Matrix crime-fighting database, saying the agency misunderstood a previous edict.

In October, Perdue killed plans to send confidential driver records such as citation histories, addresses and license plate numbers to a Florida company building the multistate database. Perdue allowed criminal, prison and sex offender records already sent to Matrix to remain.

GBI officials have since updated those criminal records and tapped Matrix to investigate crimes. GBI Director Vernon Keenan has continued as a member of the Matrix board, which met in Atlanta in November.
