Sebelius urges gaming growth

Up to 5 casinos among proposals
By JOHN L. PETTERSON
The Kansas City Star

TOPEKA — Unveiling her long-awaited plan to expand gambling across Kansas, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius on Friday proposed up to five “world-class” casinos for the state, including in Wyandotte County.

The governor also said she would reopen negotiations with the Kickapoo and Sac and Fox tribes, which have proposed building a $175 million casino complex in western Wyandotte County near Kansas Speedway. The Indian casino is not among the casinos the governor proposed.

Her plan also would authorize hundreds of video lottery terminals at The Woodlands in Kansas City, Kan., and at four other state-licensed pari-mutuel racetracks. In addition, each of about 240 fraternal lodges and veterans' organizations would be able to operate video lottery terminals — basically slot machines linked to a state computer.

1. Just what the poor need.
To be hypnotized into the notion that someday they will -"WIN IT BIG"

Rather than vote the bastards out they will play the lottery

NICE. </Sarcasm>

2. Maine just voted down a casino......well funded too.
It's kind of scary to see this country turning into a nation of quick pay-off dreamers. Cable seems to have lots of channels devoted to gaming and Las Vegas.

Now I don't have a real problem with casinos, I've been to a few and enjoy the experience....but this seems to be symtomatic of a larger cultural transformation that is underway. The cashing out of America.

3. It's stupid to ignore the revenue
these casinos can bring in. In KS, they are watching their citizens go across the state line to MO to spend money. The lottery in GA is paying for early childhood education. How can anyone say this is a bad idea? If you don't like it, don't gamble. But I guarantee you will like the new roads and the community improvements the casinos bring with them.

4. Since they lost to the Wyandottes
they are going to join 'em.

I live only blocks from the Wyandotte tribe casino.
We shall see how this flies in holy rollin Kansas.

5. NPR had a story about the trend toward funding education with gambling
I don't get it. How can gambling be seen as the panacea that will solve our problems.

Why are we "investing" in gambling. Its a quick fix for politicians. Its too easy for them to give into this.

If people want to gamble, that's fine with me. But our government shouldn't be promoting gambling. Its wrong.
