Baucus: Bush budget shorts rural schools

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush's proposed budget will likely not include enough money for Montana and other rural states to meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind education law, Sen. Max Baucus says.

Bush will deliver his request for the 2005 budget year to Congress on Monday. Baucus, D-Mont., said preliminary outlines show that Montana will receive about $46 million for programs related to the 2002 education law. He said the state had been promised $71 million.

The president's budget request begins the federal fiscal process. Congress writes spending measures, and lawmakers routinely change funding from what the president proposes.
