Congresswoman Jennifer Dunn, R-Bellevue, a fixture in state politics for more than a quarter-century, announced last night she'll retire from politics next year after serving out her sixth term.

The surprise announcement means the state loses its senior Republican, who went from IBM systems engineer to state party chairwoman, to congressional leader and confidante of President Bush.

At one point she was the highest-ranking woman in the Republican leadership in Congress. GOP politics runs so thick through her veins that she named her son Reagan, and that was before Ronald Reagan was elected president.
