Okla. crane fall kills man watching construction

Church members watching the steeple being raised on their new building looked on in horror Thursday as a crane holding the structure toppled, crushing a car and killing an 80-year-old man who had been watching from inside the vehicle, firefighters said.

The man's 78-year-old wife, who was also in the car, was transported to a hospital in good condition, ambulance officials said.

A group of people had gathered in southwest Oklahoma City to watch the installation of the steeple when the crane collapsed in the parking lot, said Deputy Fire Chief Cecil Clay.

Grace Assembly of God Pastor Joe Hancock said the couple were longtime church members.

5. I pass by the construction west of the Plaza on SW Trafficway twice a day...

I look up and see the cranes and think what an exciting job that must to be an operator. Then I think of reports like this one...

3. NIMBY's love when this shit happens.

This will end up stalling skyscraper development in some cities because NIMBY's near construction proposal sites will keep yelling "crane collapse!!!" and they'll never get built.


In Philly we're trying to get the 1500 foot LEED-certified American Commerce Center put up, but a bunch of rich old people on the same block, who are surrounded on all sides by skyscrapers already, are trying to get it stopped because they think the construction noise is going to bother them... they've got a corrupt jail-bound state senator on their side (Fumo).. they'll start using these crane collapses to stall the biggest project Philly's ever seen.

7. A friend of mine is a crane operator

I asked him about this string of accidents. He says that training has gone right down the toilet. There's people operating cranes who aren't qualified to wipe their own bum.
