Lieberman to pull plug Feb 3rd - SunTimes gossip
Scoopsville . . .

January 30, 2004

BY MICHAEL SNEED SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

Sneed is told Sen.
Joseph Lieberman
plans to pull the plug on
his presidential
campaign on Feb. 3,
which is the day he gets
federal matching funds
from the FEC in order to
pay off his campaign
debt.

*Ironically, it's also
Primary Tuesday, but at
the rate he's going, it
doesn't look like he'll win.

2. Sad commentary
The good side of this news: If Lieberman waits to get his matching funds, that's a good way to make sure none of his suppliers and/or staffers get stiffed.

The bad side, of course, is that it's taxpayer money that pays the bill.

In a way, I can't entirely blame Joe -- he did have the name recognition that others didn't have in the beginning, and he did have some solid support in a few states.

I just hope he doesn't go and spend a whole lot of money in a losing cause just to get the matching funds.

It's always about the money, isn't it?

3. The best news of the primaries is that
Lieberman will not be the nominee.

Though some I'm not crazy about, every other contender has strengths. Lieberman only makes me despair.

7. he was the "anti-Clinton"
IMHO he should have chosen Kerry instead, as Joe seemed to be the smiling agree-er at the VP debate. Kerry would have cleaned the floor with Dick and done it with a smile on his face.

11. Sounds like a good subject for a concession speech next Tuesday night
Since last Tuesday, somebody probably impressed upon Lieberman that a fifth-place finish with a single-digit percentage of the vote is nothing to crow about.

15. I don't think Lieberman's views are too bad
Or are that different from Clinton's however I feel Lieberman is unable or unwilling to stand up to Bush.

16. Lieberman was the only one I was resolved NOT to support
if he should get the nomination. It would have been like deciding between two of the same. I would have voted for the socialist candidate instead. I have developed an unpleasant dislike for Joe Lieberman since he began his campaign-an extended campaign for himself, like when he ran with Gore. I simply cannot take to this man as a Democrat.

and take your whiney-assed, thin lipped non-Democrat platform with you! What are you people in Connecticut thinking anyway? Can't you come up with a real Dem?

18. I like Joe and Haddassah as people from --
-- what I've seen of them. But Joe's running to the right of Bush just didn't win him any friends in the Democratic Party, especially this year, when Bush & Co. are the reason many Democrats are mobilizing.

We had record turn-outs in Iowa and New Hampshire, and that's a sign that candidates to the left of Dubya will do better.
