Poll: Many Latinos adopt a wait, see position on 2004 presidential election

He voted for Clinton in 1996 and Bush in 2000. In 2004 Hernando Forero's vote is up for grabs. One of Florida's coveted Hispanic swing voters, the newspaper distributor says he is waiting to see which presidential candidate comes up with a better plan to help Hispanic immigrants.
Pollsters think that half of Florida's estimated 800,000 to 1 million registered Hispanic voters could be in play in the 2004 election. (snip)
Florida's Latinos are among the most diverse in the nation and include new immigrants as well as those who have lived in the country for generations. They hail from every country in Latin America, and include Central and South Americans who don't benefit from preferential immigration policies granted to Cubans or the natural citizenship of Puerto Ricans.
In 2000, non-Cuban Hispanics voted heavily for Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore. But that group, unlike Cubans or African Americans, is far from loyal to one party.
"There have been signals all over the country that that group is willing to vote for Republicans if there's a strong campaign to get their votes," Bendixen said. "Jeb Bush was able to get 55 percent of non-Cuban Hispanics."
