Chertoff: European terrorists trying to enter US
Source: AP

WASHINGTON - European terrorists are trying to enter the United States with European Union passports, and there is no guarantee officials will catch them every time, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday.

Chertoff's comments on Capitol Hill comes as the country is entering a potentially vulnerable period with the presidential nominating conventions coming up next month; the presidential election in November; and the transition to a new administration in January — all of which may be attractive targets for terrorists.
...
"The terrorists are deliberately focusing on people who have legitimate Western European passports, who don't appear to have records as terrorists," Chertoff told lawmakers. "I have a good degree of confidence we can catch people coming in. But I have to tell you ... there's no guarantee. And they are working very hard to slip by us."

Chertoff and other intelligence officials have delivered similar warnings before, and he offered no new information about specific threats or an imminent attack.

Chertoff reiterated his concern that terrorists could sneak radiological material into the country on small boats or private aircraft. This material could be used to create an explosive device known as a "dirty bomb."
...
Responding to a question from Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, Chertoff dismissed any rumor that he is on a list of potential running mates for Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. Chertoff quipped that the only list he has for next year is a list of vacations.

14. This is preconditioning.
They are priming us for another attack and they will pin it on the EU somehow to further separate us from the Europeans.
The more fearful and isolated people are the easier they are to control. To a point.
I really think these guys have over reached. I really think that they have finally crossed the american bullshit line. I hope.....

People like him follow the path of least resistance.

They can't be bothered with anything else.

They don't value or even want real Freedom or Liberty.

Comfort and Compliance are so much easier.

And it doesn't interrupt their TV Time.

33. Yeah, I have. Where were the other "false flag" attacks that were coming?
They were imminent in 2004 before the election, and again in 2006 before the election. Iran was supposed to be invaded two years ago, and precipitate WWIII. Then it was supposed to be invaded last year. Now it's going to be invaded this year. etc....

The fringe left has been singing the same tune for a long time, and it's getting old. But, hey, a broken clock is right twice daily. Keep saying it and you might be right (unless it doesn't happen -- then what?).

Or is he stating that all these anti-terror measures we've been taking the past seven years are, well... easily foiled by dinks with a EU passport?

19. European alert!
Dangerous Americans still at large!

Michael Chertoff, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney have not yet
been apprehended, European Law Enforcement officials warn, and
they still command potentially dangerous lethal forces that will
attack with deadly results, often for no logical reason. Extreme
vigilance is advised when traveling in Europe, Asia, or North
America until these dangerous individuals have been apprehended.

39. The thing is AQ has been training Europeans in the tribal region
and in their own languages -- they recruited translators first.

But that's been going on for years. The real problem is that BushCo has ignored it until it became politically convenient to trot out.

Did I say "ignored"? I meant, enabled.

Chertoff: European terrorists trying to enter US

WASHINGTON - European terrorists are trying to enter the United States with European Union passports, and there is no guarantee officials will catch them every time, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday.

Chertoff's comments on Capitol Hill comes as the country is entering a potentially vulnerable period with the presidential nominating conventions coming up next month; the presidential election in November; and the transition to a new administration in January — all of which may be attractive targets for terrorists.

In his last scheduled appearance before the House Homeland Security Committee, Chertoff said that the more time and space al-Qaida and its allies have to recruit, train, experiment and plan, the more problems the U.S. and Europe will face down the road.

The Homeland Security Department has a strategy to protect against this small boat vulnerability and is testing radiation detection equipment in Seattle and San Diego ports.

Chertoff said that getting out a regulation to prescreen and enhance security of general aviation aircraft coming to the U.S. from overseas is one of his top priorities.

He also said he expects to approve new radiation detection technology this fall.

Responding to a question from Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, Chertoff dismissed any rumor that he is on a list of potential running mates for Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. Chertoff quipped that the only list he has for next year is a list of vacations.

Next 9/11 before the elections and use this to stop the election until further notice. The nerve to talk about "dirty bombs" when we the USA use Depleted Uranium in our bullets in Iraq. I still can't believe after all the shit Bush/Cheney have done that they would let the election happen. Bush can declare Martial Law ANYTIME he sees fit.

Been Watching "Right At Your Door" and playing with yourself again?

Trying to Secure the VP Slot?

Trying to send this Administration out in a Blaze Of Glory?

I don't think you should worry about going to Hell when this mortal coil finally lets you go, though.

30. Great. My husband has one of those passports and we're flying to the States this month.
Edited on Fri Jul-18-08 06:29 AM by WritersBlock

He's already said this will probably be the last time he subjects himself to the hassle of being a foreigner visiting the States, but that he'll make this one last trip because I have family I'd like to see, possibly for the last time unless I want to travel alone from now on.

And I wonder what will happen when they find *my* EU passport, which I have to carry with me in order to get back into the UK, although I will be entering the US on my US passport as required by law.

Am beginning to wonder if we'll make this family reunion at all.

Does Chertoff mind if we spend a few pounds in the local economy? Or would that be suspicious, too?

edited cos I'm pissed off.

35. Same old republican pre-election terror mongering. They cry wolf when they believe
that terrifying people will help them in an election.

The problem is, they lie to us so often that no one will believe them in that rare instance where something they say may actually contain a grain of truth.

Terror alert color code brown: The usual color of bullshit.

38. Geez, they're expanding the definition of a terrorist to include everybody, even you and me.
A person doesn't "look" like a terrorist(I presume that this means Arabic or other brown skinned person), doesn't have a record as terrorist, are coming to the US for legit reasons, therefore in Skeletor's eyes, they must be a terrorist.

Geez, keep this shit up Cherty and all those Europeans who are coming over and buying our shit at cut rate prices will stop coming entirely, and the East Coast tourist industry will really be in deep shit.

You'd think these people would realize the US has survived terrorists before. Hell, we even had a president assissinated by terrorists, and we're still here as a nation. The real terrorists are people like Chertoff who want to destroy this nation in order to make money and maybe preserve it.
