An Attack That Came Out of the Ether

Scholar Looks for First Link in E-Mail Chain About Obama

By Matthew Mosk
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, June 28, 2008; Page C01

The e-mail landed in Danielle Allen's queue one winter morning as she was studying in her office at the Institute for Advanced Study, the renowned haven for some of the nation's most brilliant minds. The missive began: "THIS DEFINITELY WARRANTS LOOKING INTO."

...

The use of "their equivalency" and the spelling of "Kuran" instead of "Koran" made the sentence her point of departure.

That search showed that the first mention of the e-mail on the Internet had come more than a year earlier. A participant on the conservative Web site FreeRepublic.com posted a copy of the e-mail on Jan. 8, 2007, and added this line at the end: "Don't know who the original author is, but this email should be sent out to family and friends."

Allen discovered that theories about Obama's religious background had circulated for many years on the Internet. And that the man who takes credit for posting the first article to assert that the Illinois senator was a Muslim is Andy Martin.

...

Poring over these early articles on the topic, Allen noticed what she thought was an important pattern. In each instance, someone had posted the articles on the Free Republic Web site, prompting a discussion involving the same handful of people, with several expressing a desire to spread the word about Obama's supposed faith.

FreeRepublic.com's role as a major conduit of lies, smears and disinformation is finally coming to light! This is a long article, and merits a complete read; hence (and do pardon this, mods), more Fair Use than usual. So what are you waiting for? http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/27/AR2008062703781_3.html">Go read it!

25. Latest chain email I got last week marks Obama as the Antichrist
Edited on Sat Jun-28-08 11:58 AM by wishlist
The reasons given for Obama possibly being the Antichrist were that he is Muslim and that he is a pursuavive speaker who can sway crowds. I have long ignored the fearmongering emails of this annoying relative and not responded, but finally this time myself and spouse wrote a lengthy reply and ended with request that they send no more lflammatory emails.

132. I don't really believe Bush is a Christian.
Edited on Sun Jun-29-08 02:25 AM by Virginian
I have always thought it was a part of Rove's packaging job to get the Evangelical voters to show up at the polls.
Bush says he is too busy to go to church, but look at Jimmy Carter -- he actually taught Sunday school while he was living in the White House.

edited to add:
I don't think Bush gave up drinking either.
I also think the pig farm was purchased as a political maneuver. I don't think he will go back there very often once he is out of the White House.
I'm LWOP on 9/11.
I think Cheney has been running the show more than we know. I hope McCain doesn't pick him as a running mate.

58. Somebody needs to sort out the word "fascism"
Not wanting to go off topic, here, but I think it is interesting. I'm not disagreeing w/ you but if fascism is government in the service of corporate interests (as I've been given to believe) then, properly speaking, Manhattan, Wall Street, DC (etc.) would be the "hot bed for fascism." If that's the case, what what might be a more appropriate term for the knuckle draggers?

142. True. Ben Mussolini, who claimed -

- to have invented 'Fascism' (but which was actually a political system described by a Spanish philosopher - whose name escapes me at the moment - that Ben picked up on after failing to gain power in the Italian Communist Party, and so formed his own Fascist Party) described, at two different times, two 'essences' of Fascism:

1) Fascism is the form of government which fuses the power of The State with that of Capital. This is why so many American capitalists supported Fascism and were involved in a plot to take over the government by a coup d'etat(*). Please recall that before the war Henry Ford publicly supported Fascism, and that Bush's grandfather was convicted of "trading with the enemy" - of trading with NAZI Germany when we were fighting them in North Africa in WW2.

2) Ben also said that "Fascism is an essentially religious movement."

Truly, on the one hand, it can be argued that there can be only one essence, on the other hand, it can be argued that 'the essence' of something includes all essential parts. I think Ben got it right: Fascism is the fusion of the power of State, Capital, and Religion.

------
(*) "The Plot to Seize the White House: The Shocking True Story of the Conspiracy to Overthrow FDR", by Jules Archer makes chilling reading. It is likely that the only reason the coup did not occur was because The Leader the cabal had picked - Gen. Smedley Butler, USMC - was a true hero of democracy and alerted Congress to the planned coup. As a result, he was widely ridiculed and attacked by the media - including Time Magazine and The New York Times.

But the light shown on the plotters caused them to abandon the plan - until The Year of Our Lord 2000, when it was successfully executed in a near bloodless fashion.

Smedley also wrote a great book (which the cabal apparently never read - perhaps it had not yet been published?) called War is a Racket” - and by this he had in mind the practices of the gangster racketeers of the '20s and '30s. This book should be required reading in any US History or introductory political science class - yet I never heard of it until I was 30 years out of college.

The following prophesy proved true - for I do believe that our form of government is changing from a democratic republic, to a fascist totalitarianism - and this saddens me.

freepers as young kids who have yet to question their own beliefs. It is both comforting and disheartening to see that these are not immature adolescents, but aged individuals hardened by whatever personal issues lead to a desire to hate and distrust people who aren't their kind. It is understandable that questioning long held beliefs of their own superior place in a class conscious society would be threatening.

111. My take.....
I think most freepers are what, in the early '90's was termed "angry white men." They were past middle-aged, seeing their power in the workplace declining, having grown up with a sense of entitlemen simply because they were white men and now they were having to share the workplace with women, minorities, etc. and they had to actually compete for a change. Women and minorities had learned a long time ago that they had to outperform white men just to get the job let alone make a comparable wage and companies found that these people were more dedicated and hardworking and in many cases more valuable to the company. Those angry white men were also fueled by that fat slob Limpballs.

18. Then he is Anti-Muslim?
I don't see what the big deal is. We've had Baptists, Catholics and God knows what other faiths as president. Why not a Muslim, a Jew or a Wiccan for that matter? Are they suddenly second class citizens?

The fact that Obama (or least his supporters) went to SUCH lengths to disprove it seems to imply a bias against Muslims. A simple: "No, I'm ________" would have sufficed.

Now I'm wondering what *other* bigotry and bias will come out.

29. What point about second class citizenry?
There was no mention of that, only an accusation of bigotry against Senator Obama. Perhaps your intent was to assert that the US population is bigoted against the moslem faith, which is certainly the case, and furthered by republic positions.

When the MSM was furthering the meme while at the same time bitching about his christian preacher, it OBVIOUSLY needed a vigorous response.

37. Ah, thanks! I somehow lost that. To answer your question, no, they are not suddenly second class...
Any non christian faith has been effectively second (and third, fourth, etc.) class in the US for a long time.

To use that to support an accusation of bigotry against Senator Obama's campaign could be seen as somewhat disingenuous, no?

75. One job, one pursuit.
Right now the one job that Obama has is to become president, for the sake of the people on this planet. A muslim, a jew, or a wiccan will NEVER be elected president in the foreseeable future. It's a game with rules. He has to play by them in order to win.

124. I think their intent was to...
Make people think that the Muslims believe him to be Muslim at least born to a Muslim father and therefore once that was rooted they could deliver the meme that he being born a Muslim was now a Murtadd to the Islamic Fundamentalists extrapolating further that makes him more dangerous to this country because Muslims who renounce their religion and convert to other religions i.e., christianity are cursed by Muhammed according to the Koran.

The argument therefore becomes an Obama presidency gives the Radical Muslims more of a reason to attack America making us less safe.

28. Are you for real?
This country is not about to elect a Muslim president (heck, it's a stretch to think that we have come far enough to manage to elect an African American).

Of course that statement assumes prejudice on the part of the American people, but come on - if you think it doesn't exist then I want some of what you're smoking.

Meanwhile, Obama's campaign is not some quixotic effort to reveal transcendant truths about racism in this country - it's to actually get elected to run the country and actually make some things better in the people's lives.

A false allegation that harms Obama's campaign needs to be debunked, quickly, repeatedly, and indisputably, and that is what they are doing.

Unless there is clear evidence that the good Senator is indeed Anti-Muslim, then we can conclude he is not. Nor is he anti-Christian, or anti-Jewish, or anti-Athiest.

"...would have sufficed". No-- it wouldn't. A simple denial didn't work for John Kerry. Remember something-- the radical Right only needs to something repeated over and over again, and as long as it validates their own postions, they will take it as a Truth.

Now I'm wondering what *other* bigotry and bias will come out."

No mention of the one group Americans fear more than any other....who are indeed second class citizens in the eyes of their neighbors.

Yeah! How about a atheist or human secularist president? Some skeptical critical scientific thinking in that office would be greatly helpful!

And welcome to DU.

The big deal is that you have to understand that there are people who are stupid enough to buy deeply into whatever is fed to them as long as it keeps people in power to support the corporate predators. See? These people are afraid, very afraid.

And we are not the same people who thought that surely no one would be stupid enough to support George Bush, given his abysmal record in Texas. And we certainly are not the same people who think that Republicans are moral to espouse facts as the basis of guiding the vote.

And we are not the same people who will be gracious enough to think that everyone is smart enough NOT to listen to Rush Limbaugh.

That is OVER.

Welcome to the new Democrats.

until the Stars & Stripes published an article that it was against the law to do so (Hatch Act) on government equipment.

And it stopped as far as I know.

Whenever I get any such "spam" at work, I send it to a DoD spam site, and the person sending it around gets notified, and then it stops. It didn't used to be that way. It used to be that you had to complain to a supervisor, who would do nothing because he/she (usually a "he") was already sending x-rated material around the web on govt. computers to other "good ole boys" and didn't want to "out" himself, so he would claim that it was out of his hands.

But, like I said, that was then. :)

It's been clear for some time that Free Republic is part of a network of disinformation supported by the White House. A freeper named Buckhead kicked off the trouble as soon as the 60 Minutes episode aired, ending up getting Dan Rather fired for the story about Bush being AWOL from duty during Vietnam. Buckhead works for a law firm in Atlanta that serves as a pr arm of the White House. He was outed by an LA Times reporter.

I know this, whether he actually is or is not Islamic, he can recite the Islamic call to prayer perfectly in Arabic...and did so in one interview, calling it one of the most beautiful sounds in the world.

Many Islamics believe, due to the definitive nature of that prayer, that anyone who recites it becomes a "Muslim".

All of that aside, by his actions and positions in the IL and US Senates, and by his willful, long-term assocaiations, Obama is marked as the most anti-American and marxist individual to ever gain the nomination of any major party in US history.

The Call To Prayer says things like "God is Great" "Come to prayer--come to success" "There is no Reality save the One."

For one to be Muslim, one recites the Shahada, which is different from the Call to Prayer. And to be a Sufi initiate, one must take part in a special ritual.

But no one has ever claimed that the people at FR know anything about that which they speak.

I read every word of the article and didn't come to the same conclusion that you did.

I thought the piece showed a researcher, who is clearly identified as brilliant and an Obama supporter, digging into the genesis of viral Internet claims about Obama, which are not only identified as false but also "smears."

The article even outs the people she believes started the smears and portrays them extremely unflatteringly. I don't know how you reached the conclusion that this was an anti-Obama piece but I don't see that at all.

Do you like being loud and wrong or are you just good at it? And what the hell is a "white name" anyway?

Obama had a name change from a white name to African name

Your claim is so idiotic. Not only because it's wrong but because it's so easily provable.

Here's Barack's birth certificate. Note the name on it, please.

"Swiftboating"

Exposing the lies, deceit and fraud of self-glorifying public officials

By Ted Sampley

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Is that what you think "swiftboating" means today Ted?

Too much!

BTW, It's Wilmington, NC not Wilminston....on the coast (where I live)....and Kinston is hours away. Wilmington is a picturesque port on the Cape Fear which runs to the Right because lots of rich people have their vacation houses at the beach here.
I don't know what Kinston's excuse is. It used to be a wealthy town; there are lots of big (empty, rundown) Victorian houses there. But frankly, these days it looks like a dying hole in the wall.

Those freepers have been at it for quite some time.
But, on the other hand, anyone who takes what those freepers say as 'gospel' is nuts, and needs a check up from the neck up.
Most of us know that those freepers hide behind the anonymity of e-mails, blogs, and websites. Most of them probably haven't seen sunlight in several years.
They are the same people who say that we don't have an environmental crisis, there is no problem with Bushco, Inc. and we need another like him in the White House. These are the same people who vote against their best interests every time, in favor of a pro-business coup in this country.

They are essentially harmless. They can't do anything in person. They just lurk here, and hide, so take them with a grain of salt, but spread the truth, to make them look like the traitors that they are.

126. Yep. From the article...
"During that time, polls show the number of voters who mistakenly believe Obama is a Muslim rose -- from 8 percent to 13 percent between November 2007 and March 2008. And some cited this religious mis-affiliation when explaining their primary votes against him."

The other day I received an e-mail from a family member who I once considered moderate, but is now swept up by anti-Muslim sentiment. The brainwashing is complete.

this will be dealt with and the demons that spawned it will rot in hell.

Obama is not the idiot that so many think he may be....he has run a brilliant campaign, a few gaffes, but he makes McCain look like a dead man.

Trust me...first debate, it's all over.

On edit: how is it going to look when McCain's wife waited 5+ years for him to be released from being a POW....and he dumps her for a millionairess? The man isa moral wasteland.

No argument from me about McCain being a moral wasteland, but his followers won't believe or won't care about the c*nt or the dumping for the millionairess or whatever other slimy/immoral things he has done.

I'm not that trusting in this matter, but I'll hope you're right. I think what they're going to attempt to do to Mr. and Mrs. Obama will make what they did to Kerry look like child's play, so he and his team better remain brilliant.

but I would truly be surprised if McCain got over 30% of the vote. He is the Bob Dole of 2008, he is the sacrificial goat.

The first debate, and if thereis a second, will kill him off...he has nothing, except maybe 5+ years as a POW...a relatively well treated POW because his family had Admirals in the Navy. The man is not an idiot, but he comes pretty close.

Beckwith responds to The Washington Post.

The first thing I have to say about "An Attack That Came Out of the Ether," published by The Washington Post on June 28th, is that at NO time was I ever contacted by this woman, Danielle Allen. I spoke to two male Post reporters, who spoke to me over the phone for a period of months. The first contact was in the fall of 2007. They told me they were trying to track down the source of emails they considered negative to the Obamamessiah.

I gave a heads-up to an enlightened GOPer of my acquaintance who is voting for Obama ("... I like where he's coming from... he has a realistic chance of restoring Constitutional balance and fiscal discipline while dealing with the energy and economy. McCain and the reigning GOP coterie would just fuck the country up even more severely.") about teh article this morning. He decided to drop "Peckerwith"... er, "Beckwith" a note.

You wrote,

>The first thing I have to say about "An Attack That Came Out of the Ether,"
>published by The Washington Post on June 28th, is that at NO time was
>I ever contacted by this woman, Danielle Allen.

Irrelevant: Ms. Allen and Mr. Mosk never made any such claim; Ms. Allen is working with a team of researchers who divide a large workload (including interviews). Your assertion does nothing to deflect from the article's accuracy -- in fact, your overwheening whining is almost as bad as your refusal to remove content from your site that has been repeatedly shown to be false or incomplete in such a way as to depict a derogatory or negative image or stereotype of Senator Obama.

And that was a major flaw in just the first sentence of your whiny outburst! The rest of it is just as specious and weakly defensive; I will neither waste your time or mine by Fisking the rest of it, although it would be an amusing exercise in debunking someone unable to muster a robust defense of their words, actions, or dishonest web site.

It is not Senator Obama or the Washington Post but YOU who are the problem. In fact, some of your site's content is quite arguably actionable. Senator Obama, who has a spine when it comes to bare-knuckle politics (unlike Al Gore Jr. and John Kerry) has used the old Chicago metaphor to make it clear that "if they ((read: you)) bring a knife to the fight, we'll bring a gun." The WP story should have been a big warning shot across the bow to you ad your fellow disinformation agents. Here's a hint: instead of sabotaging your own image by posting a childish, defensive, unintentionally hilarious and ultimately unhelpful blog entry to your web site, I'd bet you a buck that you should have been retaining the services of a skilled litigator. Judging from word going around the beltway and campaign circles these days, my money is on the likelihood you will need one.

Marc LeBoeuf
Georgia Republicans for Obama

PS: Hire a better web designer! Your site's layout and typefaces are on the amateurish side.

121. I think that fucker "buckhead" is a freeper.
He's the lawyer asshole who started cranking up shit about Dan Rather, after Rather had broadcast the report about bush's fraudulent Texas Air National Guard "service". He's the one who was a ringleader of the bullshit about the typewriter that wasn't, and the fonts that weren't, and the memos that were supposedly not on the level. When what was IN the memos was absolutely spot-on. But everybody in the MSM allowed themselves to be distracted by how some typewriter back in the 70's typed a "th" combination.

HAH! FOUND IT!!!

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2002039080_buckhead18.html

harry mcdougald is his name:

(snip)

But it did not come from an expert in typography or typewriter history as some first thought. Instead, it was the work of Harry MacDougald, an Atlanta lawyer with strong ties to conservative Republican causes and who helped draft the petition urging the Arkansas Supreme Court to disbar President Clinton after the Monica Lewinsky scandal, the Los Angeles Times has found.

BASTARD-BASTARD-BASTARD-BASTARD-BASTARD-BASTARD-BASTARD-BASTARD-BASTARD-BASTARD!!!!!!

The main thing wrong with this SOB is that WE don't have assholes like that on our side who are willing to go to any length - and be effective with it. What the bad guys need desperately is a taste of their own medicine. See how they like it.
