A LABOUR MP loyal to Tony Blair is believed to be behind shocking new slurs that BBC journalist Andrew Gilligan is cracking up and close to suicide.
The sanity of the Radio 4 Defence Correspondent - at the centre of the scandal over the death of Government scientist Dr David Kelly - was questioned by the Westminster source.
But the claim that the BBC was worried about 34-year-old Mr Gilligan's state of mind caused fury yesterday.
One close friend insisted: "He is not mad. Andrew is fit and well and hard at work like normal.
"That's hardly the signs of a man on the edge. It is offensive rubbish to suggest he is close to suicide and the most appalling slur on his character.
"Of course he was pretty shaken up over the weekend when it was discovered what had happened to Dr Kelly. But everyone who had known Dr Kelly was too."
The friend added: "It's typical of this Government's PR machine to sink that low. But it's another sign how desperate they are.
